Atlas:

The name given to the leadership of Redbrick. Elected every year at the Annual General Meeting it is composed of 12 members: three admins, three helpdesk, Webmaster, a Secretary, PRO, Ents Officer, Treasurer and Chairperson. All members of the committee are given ops in #lobby while the admins, along with previous system administrators still in the root group, hold [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_user root]. The webmaster may also hold root, upon passing a root competency test.

They are the Society's most popular target for abuse and insults and work tirelessly and without compensation for the Society they love so much. A list of past and present Committee members can be found at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/about/committee/

An alternative view of the Committee is that it is a collection of the power-mad, the arrogant, the popular and the insulting. All members have their own opinions on that matter but most will agree that without the Committee Redbrick would not be able to function, and for that, and perhaps that alone, they deserve thanks.

12th-16th - Redbricks Annual Tech Week was held. This year Redbrick joined forces with GameSoc,Debate*,
FilmSoc, and AstroSoc to bring a week packed full of techie events from talks to debates to film showings!

19th - d_fens nearly took down deathray. Not that this was in any way a noteworthy event.

24th - Redbricks annual WaveHunt competition takes place. Mythe-86 comes first and tnkrbell comes third for Redbrick

==April==
1st - atlas and phaxx decide to play quite the cruel April Fools Joke on all the Brickies. MOTD was changed to say that due to someone running torrents from /var/tmp/ that Redbrick has to shut down. Some brickies are just stupid and fell for it!

Admin: In order to comply with a DMCA takedown notice served on DCU,
Redbrick will be going offline indefinately as and from 00:00 this
coming Monday. Thank you all for your membership throughout the
years. We hope to return some time next year.

2nd - Rebrick Table Quiz held in the Old Bar.As usual there where winners, losers and also debates about questions!! Check out gallery for pictures, theres plenty of them anyway!

3rd - The DCUSU Genereal Elections take place
Plenty of Brickies running for position on the SU exec for 2007/2008
Gizmo runs for president, but fails to be elected.
3 brickies compete for Engineering convener(landa2,Cutiepie and Mythe-86)Position eventually was won by landa2.Cutiepie comes in second
The electoral committee was run by plenty of brickies namely receive,tnkrbell,johan,lil_cain,atlas.

5th - dramabob elected chair of the SPC (for another year), lil_cain elected secretary, and johan elected ordinary member

Also on the 5th the Annual Rebrick Admin, Helpdesk and Webmaster tests are held.Here's who took the tests-

9th - An attempt is made to rerun history when some randomer(kevd) from campus(an tarbh replacement) is invited to join RB, and write an article about it. he's generally lots less cool than cain.

10th - AGM held in QG13 at 6:30pm. All positions filled.

7th - Access to Redbrick was cut off for two hours due to a UPS in CSD catching fire! "The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, We don't need no water let the motherfucker burn, Burn motherfucker burn!"

From the HEAnet ticket:

20070606 23:51 DCU report that the cause of outage was a small fire on
one of their UPS devices. They are currently waiting for the smoke to
clear, then they will bypass the device and restore power to the PoP.
This is estimated to happen before 01:00 on Thursday 7th June.

Using the Boards with Thunderbird

How to use the boards in thunderbird (or, presumably any other client, but they're crap)

==Connecting to Redbrick==

To connect you have to forward a port as part of your ssh connection, so this will only work while your connected to redbrick.
On redbrick, the only server that supports this is deathray, so you must connect to deathray first, and then you can ssh to murphy.

===Linux/Unix/Mac===

Normally to connect you would type something like
ssh username@login.redbrick.dcu.ie

Instead type
ssh -L 1119:carbon.internal:119 username@deathray.redbrick.dcu.ie

and you'll be prompted for your password like normal. To get onto murphy then just type
ssh murphy

If you're really cool and use gnome, you can setup a nice desktop launcher with this command
gnome-terminal --command="ssh -L 1119:carbon.internal:119 username@136.206.15.3" --hide-menubar

===Windows===

Open putty, and select the tunnels options page

As above, enter:
Source Port: 1119
Destination: carbon.internal:119

Then click the add button

Once that's done go back to the session options

In the hostname box add
deathray.redbrick.dcu.ie
or 136.205.15.3

You'll want to save all these settings so you dont have to do this everything, so type a name in the box as shown above, and click save. Next time all you'll have to do is double click on "redbrick" in the saved sessions list.

Click open to start the connection. You'll be prompted for your username and password as usual. Once you've done that type
ssh murphy
to get back to murphy.

==Setting up Thunderbird==

Go into account properties, select add account, pick newsgroup.<br>
Enter your name, and your redbrick email address.<br>
For Newsgroup server enter "localhost"<br>

Once you've done all that all thats left to do is change from the default port to the one we've set up the forwarding on, so go into the settings for the account and change the 119 to 1119

Restoring a backup

If this has happened to you, you're able to restore your backups by copying files from redbricks backups.

===Deleting all your files in a directory===
rm * //Very bad, will delete all files from current folder
===Overwriting a file.===
If you're using vim, it will prompt you that you are overwriting a file if you didn't open the file for editing in the first place.<br/>
It tells you to add a ! to the write command to overwrite the file. Don't do this unless you're sure of what you're doing.

==Howto restore from a backup==

There are 7 backup directories in /backup/webtree/ and /backup/home/. The newest of each of these are the ones without numbers (/backup/webtree/webtree/, and /backup/home/home). These are the backups for the previous night. The backup for two nights ago is .1, three nights is .2, and so on.

The example given above is for a user called 'username'. As you can see, the first directory you put in is the first letter of your username, followed by your full username.

== Description ==
Welmar was graciously loaned to the society by Stephen (stephenc@rb). The MUD server used to run on Enigma but wouldn't work on Prodigy due to endian issues or some such sillyness so it was decided to get a dedicated machine for it that wouldn't be affected by admins constantly shutting down and tearing apart Enigma. Welmar went live 23rd October 2002 and the MUD moved over to it on 29th October 2002 (at 18:39). It still runs mud, sitting snugly between prodigy and the electrical buzz of the UPS.

I originally handed in my student card, and said "Use my first name, please". I got an email later giving me my username as 'James' ( my middle name ). When I asked them to change, I decided to go with something a little cooler. I had been up for hours before that playing Mechwarrior somethingorother, and the Atlas mech was my favourite. I also, occasionally, feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders.

And then when I got a little older and started noticing girls I got interested in Baywatch. I wanted to be the stud that he was on that show. Appropriately in 2000 when I joined redbrick he released one of his many hit albums in Germany - "The Magic Colleciton". So I chose david as my redbrick username because ... well actually its not that interesting really, its my name in real life.

Originally my name was a combination of many words that described me, and was dreamt up whilst I was at college in Aylesbury. It all started when I got a demo copy of Diablo from my cousin in Singapore, and us lads built our first LAN at my mate Dave's house. We also played Carmegeddon, the Star Wars game and Quake 2 (of which my mate Dave had a 600mhz processor and TWO 3dfx cards linked up in parallell - he was our God). It was necessary for me to have a character name in Diablo so I chose Nitsuj Buaya Chen, the latter two meaning 'Crocadile man that snaps up ladies' (in Singapore slang) and monkey (as my star sign is golden monkey). I later joined a CS clan called Black Legion and people naturally shortened my name down to nit. At that time I also had a friend who was called 'kippy' in real life and online, so I started using nit in real life too. Later I joined a 'talker' called theManor which was a twin site to the LambdaMoo, there was a guy there who set it all up and went by the nick 'beN', he and girlfriend sadly died in a car accident and so manor spods paid tribute but capitalising the final letter of their nick, hence why I use niT.

Originally from the character Lord Fax in the book [http://www.google.com/search?q=dragonriders+of+pern Dragonriders Of Pern] by Anne McCaffrey. I used Lord_Fax in [http://research.microsoft.com/vwg/projectsheets/comicchat.htm MS Comic Chat] for a while. I saw somebody using a 'ph' instead of an 'f', and thought, in that usual 13-year-old way, OMGZ COOL, and promptly became LordPhaxx.
I was LordPhaxx for a few years, until until around 16 when I met a bunch of other Irish nerds one afternoon. [[User:jerry|jerry]] was among them, and commented, "With a name like LordPhaxx, I expected you to be taller."

So er, I dropped the pretentious 'Lord', and I've been 'phaxx' ever since.

I didn't even know what Redbrick was when I was joining, and when I had a membership form thrust
in my face by Hyper on Freshers day 1996, we had three preferences for username. I put down "spock" as my first preference. It wasn't taken, and that is how I didn't end up with the username "data", or "benji".

Firstborn son of Adam, built the first city on earth and he's remembered for allegedly killing his brother Abel though the evidence is, to put it mildly, unconvincing and God was clearly biased against him. When I joined Redbrick, Cain was gone so I got Caine, which was the spelling of the name in an RPG I played at the time. Dropped the 'e' in my second year.
