With a strong community of posters to be found on Redbrick, it is inevitable that a number of in-jokes exist. While this page is within the Humour category, this is very debatable. Feel free to update and add to this list.

When adding a new in-joke, please keep the same format.

="Is this another one of those recursive wiki entries?"=

Recursive threads are one of the greatest tools of the users of the Redbrick newsgroups - To destroy a thread, merely ask is the thread recursive. Most Redbrick in-jokes have [[recursion]] at the core - recursion is the new lowest form of wit.

===Origin===

Digital media is prone to easy duplication, and the Redbrick newsgroups are no different. Recursive (i.e. repeatitive) newsgroup threads have existed for as long as I can remember, however however originally wrote "Is this another one of those recursive threads?" should probably be locked up for crimes against humanity.

=Finland has an Army?=

Well someone asks a question on the boards and then someone will respond with "Finland has an army?". It sometimes changed to fit in the context of the thread, for example on a thread discussing this wiki, [[User:Doc|Doc]] suggested the topic [[Finland Has An Army]].

Sometimes, someone will then ask, what is this "Finland has an Army?" shenanigans. This will prompt someone else to write a long description of the origin of the joke will then prompt someone else to reply with "Finland has an Army?"

This joke has taken on a life of its own. Some of members of Redbrick work in Google and they slipped in an ad to Google's ads: [http://thedeadone.net/?p=194 Redbrick has an Army?] In February 2009, 21 members and associates of Redbrick travelled to Finland. It was noted by a few of the group that there were, in fact, a high number of soldiers in gear compared to Ireland. At the airport in Tampere, Redbrick members were treated to two F18 fighter jets taking off. Finland surely does have an army.

Somebody posted a news story about people escaping Finland's conscription by being addicted to the internet. This made them unsuitable for military service.

Somebody followed up to this with "Finland has an army?". I don't think this was repeated too much, but the response, "They held back the Russians in World War 2" - and one million and five variants - was soon posted, by one million and size people eager to demonstrate their sexy historical knowledge. They were so eager, they didn't check to see if anybody else had posted something similar. After a while, people started posting it ironically, to demonstrate that people should check threads before posting.

Since then, "Finland has an army?" and "held back the russians in world war 2" in a response have come to mean "This has already been said". Constant reposting of the same answer in various slightly different (or implausibly identical) forms is a variant of this injoke - the Nebuchadnezzar joke below is an example. Likewise, expect the current topic to be incorporated: "Google has a Finland?" - "Held back the Matrix in world war 2".

=The Nebuchadnezzar=

Often used in response to obvious questions or lingustic related questions. Someone replies with a post saying "The name of the ship was the Nebuchadnezzar. It was the ship in the Matrix".

[http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~spock Spock] started this one off. He asked a seemingly simple question. He wanted to know if anyone knew a word he had heard which he attempted to spell it phonetically. This provoked a huge amount of responses as people replied saying it was the Nebuchadnezzar. And so an in-joke was born.

=FREE SHERRO!!!=

Often said ironically by older members to indicate that they are being intentionally loud and/or obnoxious.

===Origin===

Sometime in 1997, a user named sherro was DisUsered for being an ass (as a lot of users were wont to be). This then caused a torrent of calls from his friends to re-enable his account. These took the form of the words 'FREE SHERRO!!!' in almost every form NewsGroups, emails to committee, spamming in ItchyNuts and such). It's been verified that the call was also scrawled as graffitti in some of DCUs toilets.

Since then, FREE SHERRO!!! has been used as a statement to indicate that the sayer is being ironically loud and obnoxious. Nobody younger then about 4th gen ever really gets this.

Stands for "to be honest". Gives a cheesy superiority to the person who says it. Usually said when trying to be authoritative about something, or when telling off someone for being stupid. e.g. "You suck tbh", "Gaming is deadly tbh".

A movie title, quote, plot summary or tag-line has the main character (or a some other element) replaced with Batman. Subsequent posters followup with more examples of "Batman Movies".

When [[User:robby|robby]] was elected chair of RedBrick at the 2008 AGM, certain elected rootholders at the time began drunkenly hassling him in [[Fibbers]]. Legend has it that the cry "RESIIIIIGN" was said to have been uttered by [[User:lil_cain|lil_cain]]. It is now shouted at committee members when they do something wrong, or in an attempt to demotivate them.

=Grand=
===Origin===
Particularly associated with [[User:lithium|lithium]] and [[User:hauk|hauk]], "grand" is a complex adjective that can be used to express any level of casual assent from "good" or "ok" to "sure, why not?".

Frequently seen in #lobby, grand is most often used in conjunction with grand activities such as growing chilies or homebrewing, but can be adapted to banally express approval of almost anything. Statistics indicate that by the year 2013, the ever-increasing usage of "grand" will eliminate the need for all other mildly positive adjectives.

Failchair is a light-hearted mock term for a DCU society committee's chairperson.

From the Games Soc wiki - "The term "failchair" came about in 2008 or so as part of a Redbrick/Games Soc in-joke, whereby the word "fail" is attached to the front of all or part of a committee title. The term is used almost exclusively in jest, and rarely implies actual failure on the part of the committee member in question."

These people retain an amount of influence on the current [[committee]] at any time; [[committee]] members can make their argument more persuasive by quoting a founder who agreed with such and such a policy.

It would be surprising to find a [[fresher]] who would recognise more than one of these people, I reckon there's only one of these left in DCU.

Of Heroes and Champions

It's now almost 15 year since Redbrick was founded. Throughout its lifetime there have been many heroes and champions; those who spent days bringing our servers back online after crashes, those who organised the best events where the foundations of families were forged, and, of course, those who made an absolute show of themselves at one time or another, much to the amusement of the rest of us.

I always thought Cain got a raw deal. Firstborn son of Adam, built the first city on earth and he's remembered for allegedly killing his brother Abel though the evidence is, to put it mildly, unconvincing and God was clearly biased against him. When I joined Redbrick, Cain was gone so I got Caine, which was the spelling of the name in an RPG I played at the time. Dropped the 'e' in my second year.

And then when I got a little older and started noticing girls I got interested in Baywatch. I wanted to be the stud that he was on that show. Appropriately in 2000 when I joined redbrick he released one of his many hit albums in Germany - "The Magic Colleciton". I admit to being miffed upon hearing that both "bob" and "bobb" were already used up, but found out many many years later that "bobb" was a next door neighbour of mine in my long lost childhood in the mid 1970's. Bizarre.

Once opon a time I was trying to come up with some username that wasn't going to taken everything time I tried signing up to things, After some thinking I came up with "Fructus Sum" which is latin for "To Be Fruit" which was as close as I could get to "I am mad" in latin with out it being long or just not to my liking. Of course when Redbrick doesn't allow that many chars so I dropped the sum and go by "Fructus" which yes means "Fruit" a long which a whole lot more.

Of Course Fruitcake was my "friends" when they found out where the user name came from after I got sick of the shampoo comments... not sure is it better or worst. haha

And at the time I was reading Stormblade from the Dragonlance series, and Hauk was a ranger in that book. So I eh "temporarily" used the name.. It wasn't meant to stick! But I like it now ^_^

Originally my name was a combination of many words that described me, and was dreamt up whilst I was at college in Aylesbury. It all started when I got a demo copy of Diablo from my cousin in Singapore, and us lads built our first LAN at my mate Dave's house. We also played Carmegeddon, the Star Wars game and Quake 2 (of which my mate Dave had a 600mhz processor and TWO 3dfx cards linked up in parallell - he was our God). It was necessary for me to have a character name in Diablo so I chose Nitsuj Buaya Chen, the latter two meaning 'Crocadile man that snaps up ladies' (in Singapore slang) and monkey (as my star sign is golden monkey). I later joined a CS clan called Black Legion and people naturally shortened my name down to nit. At that time I also had a friend who was called 'kippy' in real life and online, so I started using nit in real life too. Later I joined a 'talker' called theManor which was a twin site to the LambdaMoo, there was a guy there who set it all up and went by the nick 'beN', he and girlfriend sadly died in a car accident and so manor spods paid tribute but capitalising the final letter of their nick, hence why I use niT.

Back the old days of IOL/Indigo's IRC servers I used a variety of names, which all began with the letter p. Eventually, I ditched the different nicknames and used ^P^. Redbrick doesn't support weird characters though, so now it's just p. It also happens to be my middle initial.

Originally from the character Lord Fax in the book [http://www.google.com/search?q=dragonriders+of+pern Dragonriders Of Pern] by Anne McCaffrey. I used Lord_Fax in [http://research.microsoft.com/vwg/projectsheets/comicchat.htm MS Comic Chat] for a while. I saw somebody using a 'ph' instead of an 'f', and thought, in that usual 13-year-old way, OMGZ COOL, and promptly became LordPhaxx.
I was LordPhaxx for a few years, until until around 16 when I met a bunch of other Irish nerds one afternoon. [[User:jerry|jerry]] was among them, and commented, "With a name like LordPhaxx, I expected you to be taller."

So er, I dropped the pretentious 'Lord', and I've been 'phaxx' ever since.

When I was around 16 or so, I had started using "polkabunny" as a username for quite a few things, or a variation of it when it was taken. Before I came to DCU I was on the First Year IRC channel on Quakenet, and eventually got too lazy to write in polkabunny all the time. Shortened it to polka, then just used it when I got to DCU. And now, I prefer polka. (I also like polka dots, but can't dance the actual polka.)

It was Michelle Smith (swallow) that dragged me along to sign up during first year, so I'd handed over my 4euro before I'd begun to think of a username, so I turned and said "Shit, Michelle, what will I pick?" and she suggested "receive" because it went so well with swallow. Stupidly I agreed, and it stuck (after we found a spell checker to check how to spell it that is), so i never changed it to anything better. Ironically, i never have been at the receiving end of swallows abilities.

Well like everyone, I had to pick on the day so i picked a nickname i had been using for yahoo answers. That account has since been deleted for either calling creationists braindead, redneck, ignorant, arrogant fucks or posting a howtohackwindowsandbel33t.on.nimp.org to a "how do i hack and be cool?".
Those 2 things happened the same week so it could be either. The nickname originally came up a few years after the sexual harassment panda episode but I was watching some westboro baptist church protests (the "god hates fags"/"god hates ireland"/"god hates sweden" people who shocked even fox). There would always be a bigger counter protest than their protest.
One of the counter protesters had on the panda suit and had a sign "Phelps makes me a sad panda". I found that funny and used it for a few sites.
Now looking back on it, I don't find it funny at all. Thank you redbrick article for ruining the way I look at my nickname.

in my face by Hyper on Freshers day 1996, we had three preferences for username. I put down "spock" as my first preference. It wasn't taken, and that is how I didn't end up with the username "data", or "benji".
