Insanely fast server is insanely fast. This will be the machine hosting our VMs, when we finally open them up to members. Werdz wrote a VM on/off button that people can log into, to er..turn their VMs on and off. This surprisingly critical piece of code was put in place on the 16th of February.

Later that night, Brickies congregate in Craig's room and make enough noise to annoy an uppity German across the hall, Chris gets his hair straightened and has make up put on him.
* 3rd - Brickies return from England, flight is delayed by about a half hour due to delayed flight coming from Dublin.
* 5th - Redbrick goes down in order to move user files to the new faster storage array ([[Worf]]), logins return around 9 while web server remains down for a bit longer. Users gain more space for <del>pronz</del> files

Screen is most commonly known as "that thing that lets you stay logged in to chat when you log out of RedBrick". It's a terminal multiplexer, which allows you to log into multiple terminal sessions from one terminal window and keeps them open when you go away to bed or whatever it is you do with your time.

Type "screen" at the prompt like this:

Yup, even quotation marks can be used in screen commands. So as before you do ctrl-a, then hold shift and hit the 2 key to get the " :) This will bring up a convenient list of all your windows with their names.

From this window you can view and go to any of your windows. The flags on the right indicate whether your window is logged in or not with $ symbol.

One of the most popular features of screen is that it can keep you logged in even when you're offline. This means you can leave programs running or even stay on IRC even when you're not online. When you "minimise" screen or make it invisible, it is called detaching it.

To do this, you just detach from screen instead of exiting it. To detach from screen without exiting, use the following command:
ctrl-a d

You'll then be returned to the prompt with a message telling you screen has been detached, like so:

Later, you'll come back online and want to reattach to your screen session. When you "maximise" screen or bring it back onto your terminal, this is known as attaching. To reattach a detached screen, use this command at the prompt:
screen -dr

The -d will detach any attached screens and -r will reattach your screen.

If you have more than one screen session available, you will need to specify the screen id you wish to open. You'll be given a list of the currently available screens, so then you type:

screen -r

followed by the id listed above of the screen you want to reattach to.

Quite often it happens someone may end up using the stop signal command in screen by mistake. This command is:

ctrl-a s

and you should probably avoid using it! But as the s key is beside the a key, people will occasionally run this command by accident without knowing it. As this is a stop signal, it has the unfortunate side effect of freezing up your window :( Worry not however, for to fix it, all you need to do is use the start signal again to bring it back from the dead:

ctrl-a q

This should have you back in action very shortly. However, if your screen is frozen and you can't figure out why, try asking a member of [[Helpdesk]] and they should know the answer :)

Often enough new members (and often, experienced people) will make mistakes with screen that they can't fix. To kill screen altogether and start over, use:

Basically this only really does two things, sets a hardstatus (basically a line that contains some information) and makes it display only on the bottom line and also creates a few new windows.

The new windows created are given names and optionally a number or command (or both).

screen -t irc q irssi

This will create screen window 1, give it the title "irc" and then run irssi when you start screen.

deflogin off

This sets windows logged out by default, which means that you won't have to "mesg n" windows to not receive heys

startup_message off

This turns the startup message thats displayed when you start a new screen session off.

screen -t heys -L -l 3

Will create a logged in window specifically for heys. Handy.

All this makes it very simple to restart all your processes if Redbrick ever crashes.

With the above configuration file it will look something like this:

Simply use your favorite text editor to edit your ~/.zshrc (or ~/.[name_of_shell]rc) and paste the following code into it.

That should do the job. However make sure to keep the spaces between the if statement, the brackets and the inside of the if statement (or it won't work).

In particular

$TERM != "screen"

is very important for that code segment to work, otherwise when connecting to another server (Carbon for instance), your shell will try to attach a screen session, fail and disconnect leaving you on the server you tried to connect from (Really quite annoying).

The name given to the leadership of Redbrick. Elected every year at the Annual General Meeting it is composed of 13 members: three admins, three helpdesk, Webmaster, a first year rep, a Secretary, PRO, Ents Officer, Treasurer and Chairperson. The First Year Rep is elected at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), usually held during Clubs & Socs Week at the start of October. You must be a first year member to run for this position. All members of the committee are given ops in #lobby while the admins, along with previous system administrators still in the root group, hold [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_user root]. The webmaster may also hold root, upon passing a root competency test.

They are the Society's most popular target for abuse and insults and work tirelessly and without compensation for the Society they love so much. A list of past and present Committee members can be found at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/about/committee/

An alternative view of the Committee is that it is a collection of the power-mad, the arrogant, the popular and the insulting. All members have their own opinions on that matter but most will agree that without the Committee Redbrick would not be able to function, and for that, and perhaps that alone, they deserve thanks.

* 9th - SU Election results in after many recounts. Alan Keegan (barium) is elected president, and John Murphy (bobo) is elected Deputy President, beating Mark Egan by just 6 votes. Andrew Harford (receive) loses Vice President to Melanie Farrell by 76 votes. In the battle of former RedBrick PROs John Needham (colossus) beats Padraig O'Connor (landa2) in the race for Computing & Engineering Convenor.

* 10th - Good Friday. RedBrick is offline for several hours as all power to the campus is cut for maintenance on some transformer. Murphy takes over as webserver when we eventually get in to turn it back on.

* 14th - AGM is planned for today, but is postponed for a week when it turns enough notice hadn't been given.

== September ==

It becomes known that several incoming first years have attempted to join the society - despite their student IDs not being valid yet! Bravo, brave knights!

* 23rd - [[User:coconut|coconut]] begins the tedious task of re-uploading every image on this wiki. He feels sad. [[User:gw|gw]] is conscripted to assist, [[User:angelkat|angelkat]] gives a hand.

== October ==

* 6th/7th - Clubs and Socs days are held. The 15th generation of Brickies register. Kubuntu discs, badges, magnets, freshers' ball tickets, goodie bags and freshers' leaflets are handed out. After the committee's fruitless searching for the missing RedBrick banner, SU president Alan Keegan comes to the rescue on the morning of the 6th. Apparently the banner had been hiding in meeting room 3 since Tech Week 09. Ceiling Cat's screen, keyboard and mouse are brought down and attached to Coconut's laptop so that people can play with RedBrick's services at the desk. An animated ascii train is the highlight. Attol and Coconut crash a CA1 lecture. Attol gets stagefright and says about 5 words, so Carri and Coconut handle the rest of the crashed lectures.

*8th - Generation 15 arrive. RedBrick celebrates by holding the Fresher's Ball in the Slipper. It is very well attended. The theme of the night was red. The first years wore the brick costume and Jiggy somehow ended up posing as a table for part of the night. Helpdesk and Coconut DJ. There was an eclectic mix of music. A member feedback survey had been created a few months prior. There was a raffle between all respondents. Redgiant won the wonderful prize of "Granny Racing". He has yet to collect his prize.

* 13th - Coconut resigns as admin. Attol is sad :(

* 14th - Azrael becomes first year rep. Bunbun also ran. Pizza was had by all.

==November==

* 4th - EGM held to replace Coconut. Werdz is elected by a majority show of hands. Platters are had in the Nubar.

* DCUfm forget to renew their license. RedBrick pull the stream for legal reasons, and DCUfm cry. or: "DCUFM decide to act like a bunch of 2 year olds. Redbrick gives them strange looks."

Friends in college said that I needed a nickname, probably because they're too lazy to say my full name "Diarmuid" and I find "Diarm" quite creepy, so basically, "dragon" popped into their heads and it stuck! I used be called siphi (for no particular reason, it was a random name I was known by onli ne), then changed to drag0n (with a zero). The zero is because the user "dragon" is allready taken on rb. But everyone loved the new name so I added the zero. If you hey the other dragon, you generally get a confused hey in response, so I generally have heys disabled. anyways...

Originally my name was a combination of many words that described me, and was dreamt up whilst I was at college in Aylesbury. It all started when I got a demo copy of Diablo from my cousin in Singapore, and us lads built our first LAN at my mate Dave's house. We also played Carmegeddon, the Star Wars game and Quake 2 (of which my mate Dave had a 600mhz processor and TWO 3dfx cards linked up in parallell - he was our God). It was necessary for me to have a character name in Diablo so I chose Nitsuj Buaya Chen, the latter two meaning 'Crocadile man that snaps up ladies' (in Singapore slang) and monkey (as my star sign is golden monkey). I later joined a CS clan called Black Legion and people naturally shortened my name down to nit. At that time I also had a friend who was called 'kippy' in real life and online, so I started using nit in real life too. Later I joined a 'talker' called theManor which was a twin site to the LambdaMoo, there was a guy there who set it all up and went by the nick 'beN', he and girlfriend sadly died in a car accident and so manor spods paid tribute but capitalising the final letter of their nick, hence why I use niT.

DCU Proxy And Scripts

Have you ever tried to run a script on Redbrick that communicates with external websites and found that it doesn't work?

This might be due to the proxy being set wrong. For example on [[Installing Wordpress on Redbrick|Installing Wordpress]] the proxy must be set manually in one of the files.

The proxy on Redbrick is 'http://proxy.dcu.ie:8080'. This is normally set via enviromental variables that your script can pick up. This variables are case-sensitive.

HTTP_PROXY=proxy.dcu.ie:8080
FTP_PROXY=proxy.dcu.ie:8080
http_proxy=http://proxy.dcu.ie:8080
ftp_proxy=http://proxy.dcu.ie:8080

These variables break Python's 'urllib' module because it wants the 'HTTP_PROXY' setting but finds the 'http_proxy'. You can quickly fix this in your script by having:

os.environ['HTTP_PROXY'] = "http://proxy.dcu.ie:8080"

or

HTTP_PROXY = "http://proxy.dcu.ie:8080"

(or both) near the top of the Python script (at least after 'import os').
