16th - A group of 12 brickies attend Skynet's Open Source Conference, Skycon, at the University of Limerick.

12th-16th - Redbricks Annual Tech Week was held. This year Redbrick joined forces with GameSoc,Debate*,
FilmSoc, and AstroSoc to bring a week packed full of techie events from talks to debates to film showings!

19th - d_fens nearly took down deathray. Not that this was in any way a noteworthy event.

24th - Redbricks annual WaveHunt competition takes place. Mythe-86 comes first and tnkrbell comes third for Redbrick

1st - atlas and phaxx decide to play quite the cruel April Fools Joke on all the Brickies. MOTD was changed to say that due to someone running torrents from /var/tmp/ that Redbrick has to shut down. Some brickies are just stupid and fell for it!

Admin: In order to comply with a DMCA takedown notice served on DCU,
Redbrick will be going offline indefinately as and from 00:00 this
coming Monday. Thank you all for your membership throughout the
years. We hope to return some time next year.

2nd - Rebrick Table Quiz held in the Old Bar.As usual there where winners, losers and also debates about questions!! Check out gallery for pictures, theres plenty of them anyway!

3rd - The DCUSU Genereal Elections take place
Plenty of Brickies running for position on the SU exec for 2007/2008
Gizmo runs for president, but fails to be elected.
3 brickies compete for Engineering convener(landa2,Cutiepie and Mythe-86)Position eventually was won by landa2.Cutiepie comes in second
The electoral committee was run by plenty of brickies namely receive,tnkrbell,johan,lil_cain,atlas.

5th - dramabob elected chair of the SPC (for another year), lil_cain elected secretary, and johan elected ordinary member

Also on the 5th the Annual Rebrick Admin, Helpdesk and Webmaster tests are held.Here's who took the tests-
lil_cain, Werdz, johan, and drag0n took the admin test
lil_cain, johan, castle, moju,and Revenant took the help desk test.
d_fens took the webmaster test

9th - An attempt is made to rerun history when some randomer(kevd) from campus(an tarbh replacement) is invited to join RB, and write an article about it. he's generally lots less cool than cain.

10th - AGM held in QG13 at 6:30pm. All positions filled.

Installing Wordpress on Redbrick

[http://wordpress.org Wordpress] is a nifty open-source PHP Content Management (or "blogging") web tool. You can use it to handle your website blog with ease.

It is very easy to install on Redbrick. For the most part the instructions bundled with it are correct.

You will need to have an SQL account so if you don't have one [http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/help/faq/#sqlaccess email the admins].

The only difficulty is that because it's a PHP and your trying to run it on Redbrick you've got to modify the files. You need to add '#!/usr/local/bin/php' to the beginning of any PHP file that will be excuted. But which ones?

Well I've already done it so here is the list of files you'll need to modify to get it installed and up and running. There maybe more but they'll be corner cases rather than anything else. This is only applicable to version 2.0!

These changes are also applicable to the latest version 2.0

You can use this command on Redbrick to automatically modify the files but replace file1, file2, etc. with the files from the list above.

Once you've correctly modified the files, you can follow the instructions included with Wordpress to finish the installation.

==Fixing the Dashboard==

But there is one final step. Once installed and working, you may notice that the "Dashboard", the page that welcomes you when you login, looks a bit ''blank''. Well this is because Wordpress is attempting to download other websites relevant to Wordpress such as the Wordpress Dev Blog.

To fix this, open 'wp-include/class-snoopy.php' and search for 'var $proxy_host'. Set 'proxy_host' to "proxy.dcu.ie", 'proxy_port' to "8080".

Now search for the variable '_isproxy' and set it to "true".

var $_isproxy = true;

Now the dashboard should work properly.

==Permalinks==

If your using a vhost, 'mod_rewrite' is not enabled by default. This means that Wordpress Permalink optinos do not work. You must [http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/cgi-bin/writemail.pl?username=admin-request email the admins] and ask them to enable it for your domain.

I was using it as a web handle long before I joined Redbrick. It comes from the name of one of my first roleplaying characters that wasn't just a bunch of stats. The name for that roleplaying character though, came from the computer game Streetfighter 2.

Well actually cammy was my second choice. I would have liked to use The_Dead_One but that exceeds the 8 character limit.

And then when I got a little older and started noticing girls I got interested in Baywatch. I wanted to be the stud that he was on that show. Appropriately in 2000 when I joined redbrick he released one of his many hit albums in Germany - "The Magic Colleciton". So I chose david as my redbrick username because ... well actually its not that interesting really, its my name in real life.

I didn't even know what Redbrick was when I was joining, and when I had a membership form thrust
in my face by Hyper on Freshers day 1996, we had three preferences for username. I put down "spock" as my first preference. It wasn't taken, and that is how I didn't end up with the username "data", or "benji".
