Occassionaly, Redbrick users experience rage, or 'raeg' as it's known in leetspeak. This occurs when a user has so much built-up [[emo]] anger that even the slightest things cause them to break down into a steaming furnace of fury.

Recursive threads are one of the greatest tools of the users of the Redbrick newsgroups - To destroy a thread, merely ask is the thread recursive. Most Redbrick in-jokes have [[recursion]] at the core - recursion is the new lowest form of wit.

Digital media is prone to easy duplication, and the Redbrick newsgroups are no different. Recursive (i.e. repeatitive) newsgroup threads have existed for as long as I can remember, however however originally wrote "Is this another one of those recursive threads?" should probably be locked up for crimes against humanity.

=Finland has an Army?=

Well someone asks a question on the boards and then someone will respond with "Finland has an army?". It sometimes changed to fit in the context of the thread, for example on a thread discussing this wiki, [[User:Doc|Doc]] suggested the topic [[Finland Has An Army]].

Sometimes, someone will then ask, what is this "Finland has an Army?" shenanigans. This will prompt someone else to write a long description of the origin of the joke will then prompt someone else to reply with "Finland has an Army?"

This joke has taken on a life of its own. Some of members of Redbrick work in Google and they slipped in an ad to Google's ads: [http://thedeadone.net/?p=194 Redbrick has an Army?] In February 2009, 21 members and associates of Redbrick travelled to Finland. It was noted by a few of the group that there were, in fact, a high number of soldiers in gear compared to Ireland. At the airport in Tampere, Redbrick members were treated to two F18 fighter jets taking off. Finland surely does have an army.

Somebody posted a news story about people escaping Finland's conscription by being addicted to the internet. This made them unsuitable for military service.

Somebody followed up to this with "Finland has an army?". I don't think this was repeated too much, but the response, "They held back the Russians in World War 2" - and one million and five variants - was soon posted, by one million and size people eager to demonstrate their sexy historical knowledge. They were so eager, they didn't check to see if anybody else had posted something similar. After a while, people started posting it ironically, to demonstrate that people should check threads before posting.

Since then, "Finland has an army?" and "held back the russians in world war 2" in a response have come to mean "This has already been said". Constant reposting of the same answer in various slightly different (or implausibly identical) forms is a variant of this injoke - the Nebuchadnezzar joke below is an example. Likewise, expect the current topic to be incorporated: "Google has a Finland?" - "Held back the Matrix in world war 2".

Often used in response to obvious questions or lingustic related questions. Someone replies with a post saying "The name of the ship was the Nebuchadnezzar. It was the ship in the Matrix".

[http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~spock Spock] started this one off. He asked a seemingly simple question. He wanted to know if anyone knew a word he had heard which he attempted to spell it phonetically. This provoked a huge amount of responses as people replied saying it was the Nebuchadnezzar. And so an in-joke was born.

=FREE SHERRO!!!=

Often said ironically by older members to indicate that they are being intentionally loud and/or obnoxious.

===Origin===

Sometime in 1997, a user named sherro was DisUsered for being an ass (as a lot of users were wont to be). This then caused a torrent of calls from his friends to re-enable his account. These took the form of the words 'FREE SHERRO!!!' in almost every form NewsGroups, emails to committee, spamming in ItchyNuts and such). It's been verified that the call was also scrawled as graffitti in some of DCUs toilets.

Since then, FREE SHERRO!!! has been used as a statement to indicate that the sayer is being ironically loud and obnoxious. Nobody younger then about 4th gen ever really gets this.

Mak in the Chipper

On a nameless night at the end of a semester our protagonist Mak wandered with companions into the local Ballymun road chipper. There he found himself so enchanted by one of the staff he proceeded to vocalise her loveliness to her fluster and bemusement, and our inadvertent amusement. As a show of his nonchalance at making her somewhat self conscious at his praises he proceeded to offer to let her 'piss on his chips' to get back at him and he will still think her 'such a lovely girl'.

Needless to say, just in case, none of us shared on Mak's chips that night and speaking for myself, probably never will.

On a side note, she was well damp and completely worth pissy chips.

On a second side note, the chipper burned to the ground two days later, lending credence to the theory that she wasn't all that damp.

=Finland has an Army?=

Well someone asks a question on the boards and then someone will respond with "Finland has an army?". It sometimes changed to fit in the context of the thread, for example on a thread discussing this wiki, [[User:Doc|Doc]] suggested the topic [[Finland Has An Army]].

Sometimes, someone will then ask, what is this "Finland has an Army?" shenanigans. This will prompt someone else to write a long description of the origin of the joke will then prompt someone else to reply with "Finland has an Army?"

This joke has taken on a life of its own. Some of members of Redbrick work in Google and they slipped in an ad to Google's ads: [http://thedeadone.net/?p=194 Redbrick has an Army?] In February 2009, 21 members and associates of Redbrick travelled to Finland. It was noted by a few of the group that there were, in fact, a high number of soldiers in gear compared to Ireland. At the airport in Tampere, Redbrick members were treated to two F18 fighter jets taking off. Finland surely does have an army.

Somebody posted a news story about people escaping Finland's conscription by being addicted to the internet. This made them unsuitable for military service.

Somebody followed up to this with "Finland has an army?". I don't think this was repeated too much, but the response, "They held back the Russians in World War 2" - and one million and five variants - was soon posted, by one million and size people eager to demonstrate their sexy historical knowledge. They were so eager, they didn't check to see if anybody else had posted something similar. After a while, people started posting it ironically, to demonstrate that people should check threads before posting.

Since then, "Finland has an army?" and "held back the russians in world war 2" in a response have come to mean "This has already been said". Constant reposting of the same answer in various slightly different (or implausibly identical) forms is a variant of this injoke - the Nebuchadnezzar joke below is an example. Likewise, expect the current topic to be incorporated: "Google has a Finland?" - "Held back the Matrix in world war 2".

This provoked a huge amount of responses as people replied saying it was the Nebuchadnezzar. And so an in-joke was born.

Sometime in 1997, a user named sherro was DisUsered for being an ass (as a lot of users were wont to be). This then caused a torrent of calls from his friends to re-enable his account. These took the form of the words 'FREE SHERRO!!!' in almost every form NewsGroups, emails to committee, spamming in ItchyNuts and such). It's been verified that the call was also scrawled as graffitti in some of DCUs toilets.

Since then, FREE SHERRO!!! has been used as a statement to indicate that the sayer is being ironically loud and obnoxious. Nobody younger then about 4th gen ever really gets this.

1x large(ish) packet of Rich Tea Biscuits
1x small can of Nestl<E9> Sweetened Condensed Milk
2x blocks of cooking chocolate
4 oz (100 g) Butter
Nuts
Raisins
Cherries

Melt the chocolate and the butter together in a big pot. When melted, add the
condensed milk. Stir through until the chocolate mix is very gooey. Whist
these are melting, you break the packet of Rich Tea into bits - don't crush,
or it'll just be powder. Fire them and the fruit and nuts into the mix and
turn over until everything is covered in chocolate. Line a log tin with
greasproof paper and fill with the cake mix. Stick it in the fridge overnight
and you now have some Extremely Unhealthy Cake. Goes well with coffee ;)

At some stage, someone might put up a full tutorial showing how to use git, but for now, here's a badly written and terribly phrased guide on how to get and use a repository on redbrick's git hosting area.

== Getting a git repository on Redbrick ==

Redbrick hosts git repositories for users. You (and any other users you want) can have write access to the repository. The world has read-only access via the web interface at http://git.redbrick.dcu.ie (although I'm not sure that they can actually pull from there - the system is still a bit of a work in progress), so don't use this to host any code you don't want the world to see. It's perfect for any small open source projects you feel like starting though, or if you want to branch/fork an existing open source project that's hosted on git.

=== Can I have a private repository that the world can't see? ===
Not on git.redbrick.dcu.ie. You could create one in your own home directory if you wanted to do this, but you'll need to figure out how to do it yourself :)

=== Can I use this to host my third year/fourth year/other important college project? ===
Short answer: No. And you shouldn't do this in your redbrick home directory either. There have been a number of times in the past where Redbrick has experienced problems meaning that a user who had the only copy (or the only backup copy) of a project weren't able to access it at some important deadline.

Long answer: If you have other copies of your code, and Redbrick isn't the primary (only) backup of it, and you just wanted to have yet another backup of it "just because", then ''maybe'' it might make sense to put it on redbrick. But I still wouldn't.

Before you can use redbrick's git repositories from one of your computers (or from your redbrick shell), you need to create a public/private SSH keypair there if you haven't already. You'll need to do this for every device/place that you want to access git from. To do this on a Unixey (Linux/Mac OS X/on redbrick) system, run:

This has created two files on your computer - id_rsa and id_rsa.pub. id_rsa is your '''private''' SSH key, and id_rsa.pub is the corresponding public key. You keep id_rsa to yourself, and you can give id_rsa.pub to admins to allow you to access a repository. You can also upload it to a remote server (like redbrick) and put it in a specific location to allow you passwordless logins, but you can google for how to do that.

Find an admin, and ask him/her/it if they'll add your repository to the system. They'll need the name of the repo, and any SSH '''public''' keys (not the private ones) belonging to devices that you want to be able to access your repository from sent to them. For example, if you want to be able to access the repository from your laptop, send them the id_rsa.pub file that you generated on your laptop (you'll find it in ~/.ssh). Postgraduate study is any study after your basic degree, be that science, engineering, arts, etc. There are two main options:

==Masters (M.sc., M.eng., M.A, etc.)==

A Masters is usually one year long, and it qualifies you as someone with an "in-depth" knowledge of a particular field. To get a Masters, you're required to show that you have a detailed knowledge of that particular field. There are two types of Masters, 'Taught' and 'Research':

* Taught
** Has the same academic year & same format as your basic degree (e.g. semesterised, lectures, exams)
** Just like a year's extension of college, only typically harder
** Typically there is a project/dissertation at the end (e.g. 3 or 4 months to complete)
* Research

** You have to conduct independent research, perform experiments, read/write academic papers

That is, they're not content with you knowing a lot of stuff, you have to show something that no-one in your field, anywhere, has shown before. You could typically do this by applying a new method to an old area, an old method to a new area, or a new method to a new area! Or something like that. The Doctorate also should prepare you for life as an academic: writing reports, scientific papers, meeting deadlines, interacting with other researchers at conferences, etc.

==Academic Life==

The academic life can be a dream or a horror, depending on who you talk to. Due to the lack of a structured work day, typically academics can come in (and leave) at whatever time they want, or take coffee breaks whenever they want. On the other hand, there are deadlines to meet in the form of theses, reports, papers, grant submissions. You could be working with the hottest equipment, or the shittest equipment. Academics can be harsh critics, and you will almost certainly have to defend your work on a regular basis through argument. You will be mostly expected to be able to work on your own (people are generally busy with their own things, and people helping people isn't always something that happens as fluidly as it should). Money isn't super at all (unless you've got a great grant, you work in a loaded Research institute, or you're a Professor), but it can all depend on the research lab you are in! On the plus side, it can of course be exhilarating to witness a result that nobody has before, or to feel you are on the edge of scientific knowledge - but there is a tradeoff you have to consider; academic life is not necessarily for everyone!

Sometimes, someone will then ask, what is this "Finland has an Army?" shenanigans. This will prompt someone else to write a long description of the origin of the joke will then prompt someone else to reply with "Finland has an Army?"

This joke has taken on a life of its own. Some of members of Redbrick work in Google and they slipped in an ad to Google's ads: [http://thedeadone.net/?p=194 Redbrick has an Army?] In February 2009, 21 members and associates of Redbrick travelled to Finland. It was noted by a few of the group that there were, in fact, a high number of soldiers in gear compared to Ireland. At the airport in Tampere, Redbrick members were treated to two F18 fighter jets taking off. Finland surely does have an army.

Somebody followed up to this with "Finland has an army?". I don't think this was repeated too much, but the response, "They held back the Russians in World War 2" - and one million and five variants - was soon posted, by one million and size people eager to demonstrate their sexy historical knowledge. They were so eager, they didn't check to see if anybody else had posted something similar. After a while, people started posting it ironically, to demonstrate that people should check threads before posting.

Since then, "Finland has an army?" and "held back the russians in world war 2" in a response have come to mean "This has already been said". Constant reposting of the same answer in various slightly different (or implausibly identical) forms is a variant of this injoke - the Nebuchadnezzar joke below is an example. When [[User:robby|robby]] was elected chair of RedBrick at the 2008 AGM, certain elected rootholders at the time began drunkenly hassling him, both verbally and physically, in [[Fibbers]]. Legend has it that the cry "RESIIIIIGN" was said to have been uttered by [[User:lil_cain|lil_cain]]. It is now shouted at committee members when they do something wrong, or in an attempt to demotivate them.

=Grand=
===Origin===
Particularly associated with [[User:lithium|lithium]] and [[User:hauk|hauk]], "grand" is a complex adjective that can be used to express any level of casual assent from "good" or "ok" to "sure, why not?".

Frequently seen in #lobby, grand is most often used in conjunction with grand activities such as growing chilies or homebrewing, but can be adapted to banally express approval of almost anything. Statistics indicate that by the year 2013, the ever-increasing usage of "grand" will eliminate the need for all other mildly positive adjectives.

Failchair is a light-hearted mock term for a DCU society committee's chairperson.

From the Games Soc wiki - "The term "failchair" came about in 2008 or so as part of a Redbrick/Games Soc in-joke, whereby the word "fail" is attached to the front of all or part of a committee title. The term is used almost exclusively in jest, and rarely implies actual failure on the part of the committee member in question."

On the evening of the 30th March 2010, RedBrick had a grand wee quiz. Problem is: it was a farce.
In the raffle, receive won the Dell netbook. Fair fucks you might think. But I ask you this: why did he buy 24 tickets as opposed to 25? 24 tickets cost €28, yet 25 tickets cost €25. Surely one would go for the more economic option? Also, receive had 6 people on his team. The maximum per team was officially 4 people. We know this coz we asked the committee before it started in attempt to make some unnecessary lulz: "What actually constitutes a team?"
So yeah. Rabble etc. I call shenanigans.

Macports is like apt-get for OSX, it contains many useful packages, and is a good way of keeping certain things managed and up-to-date.

However, like many tools, it doesn't 'just-work' on the networks in DCU, so here's a guide that will get it up and running within DCU.

==Macports Installation==

* Install [http://www.macports.org Macports]
* Then edit it's config file:
sudo vi /opt/local/etc/macports/macports.conf
* Hit Shift+G for the bottom of the file, and copypasta the following few lines in:

proxy_override_env yes
# HTTP proxy:
proxy_http proxy1.dcu.ie:3128
# HTTPS proxy:
proxy_https proxy1.dcu.ie:3128
# FTP proxy:
proxy_ftp proxy1.dcu.ie:3128
# rsync proxy:
proxy_rsync proxy1.dcu.ie:3128

* Then update the port tree:

sudo port selfupdate

* And if everything is correct, you should see something along the lines of:
The ports tree has been updated. To upgrade your installed ports, you should run
port upgrade outdated

Occassionaly, Redbrick users experience rage, or 'raeg' as it's known in leetspeak. This occurs when a user has so much built-up [[emo]] anger that even the slightest things cause them to break down into a steaming furnace of fury.

Such outbursts are often spotted on [[IRC]], but have been known to occur on the boards. A common cause of rage is shit trolling by another user and/or deep-rooted psychological problems. Nobody can be sure really; but then again, nobody cares.
