Drag0n: /* The basics */

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) allows real time chat over the internet. People can communicate in groups in rooms known as channels or one to one through private messages.

Redbrick's IRC server is hosted on Deathray and although prone to the odd crash now and again, it's fairly active most of the time.

Below is a brief introduction to the use and etiquette of IRC.

The Basics
There are 3 ways to connect to redbricks IRC server. Webchat, irssi and your own IRC client.

Webchat
Webchat is a new addition to Redbrick. It allows you to connect to IRC from any web browser which supports java applets. Visit http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/chat to see it.

Irssi
This is the most common way to connect to IRC at present! You can access it by typing 'chat' or 'irssi' from your terminal after logging into Redbrick. You'll then be greeted with a screen like this:

This might look a little daunting at first, so we'll explain what everything means.

The line at the top of the screen is the topic, which contains info about current events, funny quotes or random gibberish. In this case it shows what's happening during Rag Week. Below this, is the main area where messages and info are shown. Every time you join a channel in IRC, you're shown who's in it, so all the words between the different '[' and ']' characters are the nicks of people in that channel. This area will soon fill up with messages from people talking.

As you can see, phaxx has just said hello to receive. Phaxx's name is highlighted here because he's addressed receive directly. Highlighting makes sure you notice when people are talking to you. Your own nick will appear in bold (just in case you forget which one is you).

Status Bar

The blue status bar at the bottom of the screen will keep you up to date with what's happening in all your channels. It shows your nick, then the current channel (and its modes in brackets). The Act part on the right will show you if you something's happening in another channel by displaying the number of that channel.

IRC client
Another way to connect to IRC is by using your own client such as (eg.) Gaim (now pidgin.im), ...
This is a slightly more complicated way of connecting, but has advantages such as integrating chat with msn, Gtalk and AOL chat, which you may also be using.

You need to set the following when setting up a new IRC account.
* Server: ircproxy.redbrick.dcu.ie
* Port: 6667
* Username: your own redbrick nickname
* Password: your redbrick password

Chatting
To chat, all you have to do is type what you want to say and hit return.

For example, when you type:

[#lobby] I think that undone guy is really cool!

and then hit return, you'll get something like this:

< gizmo> I think that undone guy is really cool!

If you want to do perform an action simply type '/me' and then the action:

[#lobby] /me thinks that undone guy is really cool.

will produce:

* gizmo thinks that undone guy is really cool.

An endless variety of emoticons can also be used to express feelings.

If you want to leave chat just type:

/quit <text>

which disconnects you from the IRC server and returns you to your shell. The text parameter is optional, when it's used it gives a reason to the others for your leaving, for example:

/quit I must flee!

Of course, if you're using the WebChat client, it's probably quicker just to close the window when quitting.

Navigating IRC
An IRC server will have lots of different channels. When you first connect to the server you will find yourself in Redbrick's biggest channel, #lobby. You can go in and out of most rooms to see who's there or join a conversation. If you want to check what other rooms there are, you can type '/list'. If you're using WebChat, then just click the Channels button up top to take a look.

This will give you a list of the rooms with two or more people in them, and the topic associated with them.

Anyone can create channels, to do this you simply have to join a room that doesn't already exist. In order to join a room, you just type:

/join #<name of channel>

So for example if you wanted to join the #gamessoc channel, you would type:

/join #gamessoc

and there you can chat about games and make fun of Simon to your heart's content.

If you want to get back to #lobby or any other channel, hold alt and press the number associated with that channel, which should be 2. You can also move through channels one by one by holding alt and pressing the left or right arrow key. In WebChat, simply click the name of the channel at the bottom.

You can get a list of the users in the current channel by typing:

/names

or

/n

while there. This will give you a list of everyone in the room at the time. In WebChat, all the names just appear on your right.

To check the name and details of a specific user, type:

/whois undone

or

/wi undone

to bring up some information on that user.
If you'd like to leave a particular channel, type:

/part

followed by any message you want to leave with.

Private messaging
If gizmo wants to tell undone he thinks he's a really cool guy, but doesn't want everyone online to see it, he can do this:

/msg undone I think you're a really cool guy.

This will send the private message "I think you're a really cool guy" to the user undone. This starts a new channel between just two people where the conversation can continue, or not.

Chat etiquette and channel operators
Chat has a certain amount of unwritten rules about being polite and courteous to others. Obviously we don't aim to censor users, but there are certain things that are to be avoided.
Avoid excessive use of the Caps Lock button as it appears as though you're shouting and can get annoying.
Avoid using colour, as although it probably annoys atlas, which we all know is fun, it can get quite irritating to other users too.

Of course some people will break the rules and as such there are channel operators around to step in when they're needed.

Channel operators are denoted by having an '@' symbol before their name like so:

<@undone> i have ops! \o/

All members of committee and some of the admins have ops on #lobby. If you create a new channel, then you will automatically gain ops there and have control over things. A channel operator can kick or ban a user from a room and also set the modes and topic. When kicking or banning a user, the channel operator must always ensure that as witty a remark as possible is added afterwards:

06:07 -!- korvuss was kicked from #gamessoc by undone [witty remark!]

Modes
Each room in IRC has its own set of modes that determine what users can do in the channel. Some of the following commands set some of the more commonly used modes to a room:

/mode +i

This makes the room invite only. In order to invite someone to the room, type:

/invite undone

to invite undone into your channel.

/mode +o undone

will give undone ops in your channel, which is an excellent idea.

/mode +t

will set the channel so only ops or half ops can change the room's topic.

/mode +k pass

sets the password "pass" on your room.

IRC has other useful commands such as /exec, which lets you execute a shell command as though at the prompt. For example:

/exec ls

Be wary of users who tell you to run a /exec command, as it may not always be in your best interest to do so.

Obviously there's a lot more to learn about IRC so if you have any questions, email Helpdesk, or you know... google it.

This page contains information on how to customise your .zsh shell account.

Changing The Command Prompt
Right, you've seen you friends with colour command prompts showing them who is heying them with lots of other bells and whistles and you wanna be part of the "cool" gang. Unfortunately you've just gotten your account and it's... kinda plain. Well then you've come to the right place. The first thing we're going to do is show you how to set your own command prompt message. This is very easy to do, simply exporting a system variable as follows:

receive@murphy (~) % export PS1="[zsh prompt]>"
[zsh prompt]> export RPS1="[right side prompt]"
[zsh prompt]>                           [right side prompt]

All we have done here is exported the two variables for the left side of the command prompt (PS1) and the right side of the command prompt (RPS1). You can add these two commands to your .zshrc so that your command prompts will be set like so every time you log in. Just place these lines in your .zshrc:

export PS1="Your Left Side Command Prompt ==>"
export RPS1="Your Right Side Command Prompt ==>"

and then source your .zshrc by typing:

source .zshrc

Using zsh escape sequences
zsh has some system escape sequences which can be used in your command prompt also. These sequences are special characters which relate to system properties. They can be included in your command prompts to make your prompt more dynamic. Some of the common escape sequences are:

width="300"|Property
width="225"|Escape Sequence
Your current working directory relative to /home/ || %d
Your current working directory relative to /home/member/u/username || %~
Begin and end bold print || %B....%b
Begin and end underlined print || %U....%u
server name, eg - murphy.redbrick.dcu.ie || %M
The part of the hostname up to the first . - murphy || %m
Your Login Name || %n
System time in HH:mm format || %T
System time in HH:mm:ss format || %*
Today's Date in YY-MM-DD || %D
Your current tty e.g. pts/100 || %l

Including these in your command prompt exports allows you to have a clock on your command prompt which updates every time you press return, and you can see your current working directory to save you typing "pwd" every time you forget where you are. e.g.

receive@murphy (~) % export PS1="[%B%n%b @ %M]>"
[receive @ murphy]> export RPS1="[%* on %D]"
[receive @ murphy]>           [12:00:00 on 02-05-15]

Adding colours to the command prompt
Its still looking kinda plain isn't it? Maybe we could add some colours to it to see what we can do. zsh has another special set of escape characters specifically for printing colours at the prompt and we can also add these sequences to our PS1/RPS1 variables.

At this point it gets a little more complicated. But with a little perseverance you can have your own customised and coloured account. The following are the escape sequences for creating the coloured text.

width="200"|Colour
width="225"|Escape Sequence
Red text || %{\e[1;31m%}
Green text || %{\e[1;32m%}
Yellow text || %{\e[1;33m%}
Blue text || %{\e[1;34m%}
Pink text || %{\e[1;35m%}
Cyan text || %{\e[1;36m%}
Grey text || %{\e[1;37m%}
Grey text || %{\e[1;38m%}
Grey text || %{\e[1;39m%}
Dark grey text || %{\e[1;30m%}
Back to normal || %{\e[0m%}

Here's the tricky part. These colour escapes sequences have to be printed to the prompt within the export command.
Here's the syntax for making a red word in the left command prompt:

receive@murphy (~) % export PS1="[$(print '%{\e[1;31m%}%n%{\e[0m%}') @ %M]>"

What this command means is:

export PS1="
export the variable
[
print the opening '['
$(print '%{\e[1;31m%}
print the escape for "RED" to the prompt
%n
the escape for username to the prompt
%{\e[0m%}')
print the escape to return to normal text
@ %M]>"
finish printing prompt message.

Pre-commands
This is just a sample of how you can make your account "look" better. there are plenty more tricks which can be added to your account, to customize it for what you need. For example, placing a precmd in your .zshrc can dynamically generate the command prompt, every time you press the enter key. Why would you do this, you might ask? Won't it slow down my prompt and run a process every time I hit the return button for a new line? (Yes, but...) Well let's say you wanted to know, at a glance, whether your mesg status was 'n' or 'y'. A precmd could generate a message as part of your command prompt, every time you pressed enter, to let you know your message status. Placing the following lines in your .zshrc file will accomplish just that.

export PS1="[%n @ %M]>" #normal left prompt with name and server

#create dynamic right prompt with date and message status
function precmd	{
export RPS1="(%D)[mesg `mesg`]"
}

Auto completion
You may have noticed that zsh supports command auto-completion (as do most Bourne-compatible shells). For example if you type "cd pu" and press <-TAB-> it will automatically complete the command for you to "cd public_html". If you also have a directory called "pubs" then auto-complete will give you a list of all possible completions to what you have already typed. You can specify your own auto-completions to the command prompt in your .zshrc also. Maybe you're just lazy and don't want to have to type your friend's username when you're spying on him/her. In this case you could set up and auto completion list from your .friends file. e.g.

function userlist { reply=(`cat ~/.friends`); }
#generates a list of usernames from your .friends file

compctl -K userlist hey
#adds this list of names to auto completion for the command "hey <username>"

compctl -K userlist ps -fU
#adds this list of names to auto completion for the command "ps -fU <username>"
set COMPLETE_ALIASES      #adds the alias

So say I'm the only person in your .friends file whose username begins with "c". Typing "ps -fU c<-TAB->" will auto-complete to "ps -fU receive" (NB* this will also work for an alias of that command if you have one set). This can be convenient if you have a list of commands that you use on a regular basis for which aliases would be unsuitable.
zsh message (exporting ARGV0)

Removing the help message
Everytime you sign into redbrick, you get the help message. If you're tired of seeing this all you need to do is add a file called .nohelp in your home directoty. To do it type

receive@murphy (~) % nano .nohelp

and then save the file.

Even faster... Type
recieve@murphy (~) % touch .nohelp

Customised zsh messages
You may have seen when you "spy" on another user's processes that they have a customised zsh message in the process list. More and more people do this as an added customisation (and annoyance ;)) to their account.

receive@murphy (~) % ps -fU receive
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
receive   2120  2118  0 Feb09 pts/212  00:00:01 -zsh
receive  16581  2120  0 02:00 pts/212  00:00:00 ps -fU receive

receive@murphy (~) % ARGV0='Custom Message' exec zsh

receive@murphy (~) % ps -fU receive
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
receive   2120  2118  0 Feb09 pts/212  00:00:02 Custom Message
receive  22095  2120  0 02:06 pts/212  00:00:00 ps -fU receive

The command ARGV0='Custom Message' exec zsh changes the default message from -zsh to whatever you want. If you want this to be set everytime you login to redbrick, you can place the command in a file called .zlogin in your home directory. This file automatically gets sourced, when you exec a login session on the system.

Be Careful:

If you are going to use a .zlogin file with the ARGV0 variable exported to something else, then you should take any commands from your .zshrc file, which print information to the screen and move them into your .zlogin instead. The reason for this is that when you log in, the system will:

* source your .zshrc
* source your .zlogin containing - ARGV0="" exec zsh
* source your .zshrc again - because of the exec zsh in .zlogin

If there were any commands in your .zshrc that printed to the screen, rbusers for example, then they would end up printing twice. So for any programs which you want to print to the command prompt at login. You should place them in your .zlogin.

Also be aware that resetting ARGV0 from its unset state will annoy some programs, most notably mv and cp, which will complain that the command is not of the right format. To get around this, do unset ARGV0, and then (if you must) reset the ARGV0 to its original value by either running ARGV0='Custom Message' exec zsh or sourcing your .zlogin file.

Drag0n: /* Your home directory */

Beginning Unix

This is a primer for those of you who have no previous experience of a UNIX system (which is most of us :o) ) and will teach you the basics of changing your shell and using programs such as mail and news.

Using your shell
Ok, when you first start using Redbrick and you log on, you'll be looking at a screen which looks fairly plain with some basic instructions for reading mail, news, chat, etc. This is great when you're starting off, but after a while, you'll find that just staring at the screen can hurt your eyes, so you'll want to do other stuff. You'll then see why a lot of people type stuff when using computers. The way that most people prefer when they get used to it, is typing in commands in a 'shell'. This sounds really difficult, but you'll soon get into the hang of it and be heying your friends and going into chat and mailing your ma and so on :o)

Directory Structure in Unix
The root directory
Every file on Redbrick has what's known as a path. Basically, it's the location of the file on the system. The format in Unix is a little different to Windows, for example, on a Windows/DOS machine, an example would be:

c:\projects\essay\essay.txt

while on a Unix system like Redbrick this could be:

/home/member/bubble/project/essay/essay.txt

The difference here is that you don't actually specify drive letters. Everything begins at the root folder, which is denoted by a forwardslash (/). Everything then goes from that, with each subfolder being separated by another /, but don't get confused by the two. One last thing on this topic, you can change to the root folder by typing:

cd /

Your home directory
Your home directory is where you store all your files. On Redbrick, your home directory is:

/home/member/u/username/

where 'u' is the first lettter of the username. Committee members would find their home directory in:

/home/committe/username

That folder, and everything in it is yours, and you have control over it. You can add files, create subfolders and change permissions on your files. Your mail is stored there, as is everything else. To change into your directory, you use the cd command. One way of changing into your home directory is by typing

cd /home/member/firstletter/username

but there is a special character to represent your home directory, namely tilde (~). So a shorter version is:

cd ~

However, cd on its own should do the same thing.

cd

Your current/parent directory
There are lots of special characters in unix. You've seen two already, / for the root directory, and ~ for your home directory. Another one is simply '.'. What a fullstop represents is your current directory. You might not think this is useful, but it is, especially in commands like cp and mv for example, where you are copying or moving stuff into your current directory. It can also be expressed as ./, but they both mean the same thing.

Then there's what's known as your parent directory, the one just before your own. In the example, if you were in the folder:

/usr/local/bin

then your parent folder would be:

/usr/local

Your parent folder is denoted by '../' So, if you wanted to change into it, you simply use the command:

cd ../

Basic Unix commands
Say you wanted to create a file in your home directory called 'phonenumbers'. You need to use an editor. The editor on Redbrick that is the best to use when you're starting off, is nano. In fact, lots of experienced users still use it. So, to create your file, you would type:

nano phonenumbers

This will open up the nano editor, with a blank file called 'phonenumbers'. Now, just simply type in whatever you want in this file.... To save it you can hold down control and hit 'o' (when I say control-o, that's what I mean), then hit return to confirm the filename 'phonenumbers'. If you want to exit, then you don't have to do a control-o, you can use control-x. It will ask you if you want to save the changes, so you press 'y' and again hit return to confirm the filename.

Some more unix commands:

who
The command 'who' lists all the users on the system, what pts they're on, the time they logged on and the machine they logged on from.

ls
The command 'ls' simply lists all your files in the folder that you are in, One point, there can be 'hidden' files in a folder. Their names begin with a "." They aren't really hidden, it's just that ls won't see them, unless you tell it to look for them by using the command:

ls -a

This will show ALL files in that folder. Another 'argument' that you can pass ls, is the l option, which gives a detailed listing of the files, and you can specify more than one argument to ls, or any other command for that matter. The command:

ls -al

will give a detailed listing of all files in your current folder, including 'hidden' files.

cd
I've already covered this in a way, it changes your current folder or 'working directory' as is the proper name for it. Some examples:

cd /usr/local/bin

changes your working directory to /usr/local/bin

cd /

changes your working directory to the root directory

cd ../

changes to your parent directory

cd ~

changes to your home directory

mkdir
This command simply creates a directory. You can only create directories in directories that you have permission to write to, such as your home directory, or /tmp for example. Some examples:

mkdir project

creates a directory called 'project' in your current directory

mkdir ~/project

does the same, only puts it in your home directory, regardless of whether your home directory is your working directory or not

cp
The command cp is used to copy files around the place. There are two arguments you must pass to cp, the source file (the one you want to copy) and the target file (the file you want to copy it to). That sounds confusing but it's not really. When you copy a file, you can specify a directory as the target, that way the file will be copied with the same name into that directory. Some examples will show this better:

cp ~/project/intro.txt ~/

will copy intro.txt out of ~/project into your home directory

cp ~/project/intro.txt ~/introduction.txt

will make a copy of the same file in your home dir, only renamed to introduction.txt

cp ~/project/intro.txt ./

will copy the same file into your current working directory

You can't copy directories like this however, to copy a directory you must use the -R switch, which will copy all sub-directories of that directory as well, so an example would be:

cp -R ~/project/images ~/images
which will copy the directory 'images' out of 'project' to your home directory

mv
The command mv moves files between folders, and can move folders themselves. Its usage is very similar to that of cp. in fact it's the same, only it deletes the source file, leaving the target file. That is, if you mv one file into another folder, the new file will remain, while the old one is deleted, in effect, a 'move'. mv is also used to rename files. Some examples:

mv ~/hello.txt ~/bye.txt

renames hello.txt to bye.txt (in your home directory)

mv ~/bye.txt ~/project/hello.txt

renames bye.txt to hello.txt and moves it into the directory ~/project

mv ~/project ~/oldstuff/project

moves the directory ~/project into ~/oldstuff

rm
The command rm is used to delete files. Be careful with this command as once you remove a file, you've lost it unless you made a backup of it. The command is easy to use, an example is:

rm ~/hello.txt

to delete the file 'hello.txt' out of your home directory

pwd
One of the simpler commands, simply typing pwd at the prompt will display your current working directory. 'pwd' stands for 'print working directory'.

cat
This stands for concatenate. This command is really useful, if you have a text file you want to view without going into a text editor, you can simply type, for example:

cat ~/hello.txt

which will simply display the text file on the screen. If the text file is large, even more than a screen, then this can be annoying. This is where the command more comes in. 'Piping' the 'cat hello.txt' into it will cause the page to be displayed on screenful at a time, using return to go down one line at a time, or space to go down one screenful at a time. There is a command called less which does the same, but it wont bring you back to the command line after youve finished viewing the text file until you press 'q'. The command you need to type is

cat hello.txt | less

The '|' is called a pipe, got usually by holding down shift and \, and is used for putting the output of one command, in this case, 'cat hello.txt' into the input of another command, in this case, 'less'. There are lots of things you can do with cat, and redirection(using pipes etc..) but I'm not going to go into that here.

That's it....

There are more unix commands that you can imagine, the ones I have given here are basic ones, with a few basic examples for you to get started. To get more uses for any of the commands or any others, simply type:

man command-name

If this has happened to you, you're able to restore your backups by copying files from redbricks backups.

Causes of needing to restore backups
Deleting all your files in a directory
rm * //Very bad, will delete all files from current folder
Overwriting a file.
If you're using vim, it will prompt you that you are overwriting a file if you didn't open the file for editing in the first place.<br/>
It tells you to add a ! to the write command to overwrite the file. Don't do this unless you're sure of what you're doing.

Howto restore from a backup
<pre>
ssh carbon
cd /backup/webtree/webtree[.{1-6}]/{a-z}/<username>
cp filename ~/public_html/.    OR cp -R * ~/public_html/.
exit
</pre>

Example of restoring a file
<pre>
ssh carbon
cd /backup/webtree/webtree.1/d/drag0n
cp index.html ~/public_html/.
exit
</pre>

This will copy drag0ns (ie. me) index.html from a backup from 2 days ago into drag0ns public_html folder.

This is an introduction to HTML tutorial. It is a simple guide to getting a simple website up and running under your account on redbrick.
Where will the webserver look for your site?
To access your website type: www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~username

The webserver will automatically look for the public_html folder in that users home directory. It then looks for the index file in that folder. If it can't find either of them it will return an "Error 404" Requested URL Not Found.

Permissions for your website
It is important to make sure the webpages have the correct permissions. A lot of the time, the permissions are wrong meaning they can't be seen on the web. To solve this remember the following bit of information.

For your webpages to be seen you need to make sure your permissions are correct. Your public_html folder needs to be readable, writable and executable to yourself and executable to everyone else.
The files in your public_html need to be readable and writable to yourself but only readable to everyone else.
* chmod 711 ~/public_html
* chmod 644 ~/public_html/index.html

Setup Code
Once that is okay, all you have to concentrate on is your index.html and/or the other pages you wish to put on the web. Here's some html code to get your feet off the ground.<br/>
Using your favourite text editor (nano and vim are both installed on redbrick). Create a file in your public_html folder called index.html and insert the following code.
<pre>
<html>
<head>
<title> Title of page </title>
</head>
<body> The actual webpage goes in here </body>
</html>
</pre>

The <head> and </head> tags tell the Web browser where the HTML in your document starts and finishes. After the <html> is where all the document's information should go. Between <title> and </title> is where the title of your page should go. This appears in the bar at the top of the browser. After these come the <body> and </body> tags. This is where you put the information you want displayed on the actual webpage itself.
It is important to make sure to close all the tags in the right order i.e if you open a head tag and then a title tag, you have to close them in the order title then head.

Finale
This is just a basic introduction to get you on your feet. There are loads of sites with further detail. If you need a hand, feel free to get in contact with a member of helpdesk.

Many people like to listen to music while they work. When programming, a great deal of concentration is required. One must be able to juggle many different kinds of information, remembering how various bits of your project interact.

There's a lot to keep track of. Distractions from your environment really hurt one's productivity while programming, and music can help.

Not just any sort of music, unfortunately. Many programmers have found rock or metal distracting, and have turned to electronica or dance, stuff they wouldn't normally consider.

So, without further waffle, here's a list of artists and streaming radio stations that some programmers find aid concentration.

Streaming stations
* WoED - World of European Dance. Dance & trance, focus on european stuff. High-quality streams, MP3/Windows Media/Real Media.
* Limbik Frequencies - "mix of ambient, downtempo, ethereal, industrial, and intelligent techno". They play stuff like Aphex Twin, Air, DJ Shadow, Loop Guru, Jega, etc. 128k mp3 stream.
* Digitally Imported - Trance, Vocal Trance, Chillout, Deep House, Hard Dance, Euro Dance, Progressive, Goa-Psy Trance, Hard Core, DJ Mixes, Drum 'n' Bass, Classic Electronica. Okay, so a lot of the genre names are totally gay, but some of the music is good. Also high-quality multi-format streams.
* Slay Radio - Mostly remixes of old Commodore-64 tunes. Offers streams of varying bitrate, mp3 format.
* Soma FM - Ecelectic Ambient, choose deep spaces beats, electronica, jazz or even 70's rock streams... its all good backround music. High bit rate streams and rare down times, one of the best online.

Artists
* Belle Orchestre
* Explosions In The Sky
* The Album Leaf
* Celestial
* Aphex Twin
* REM
* Red Sparrowes
* Isis
Movie Soundtracks
* Gladiator
* Gattaca
* The Shawshank Redemption
* Solaris (very ambient, almost classical at times)
* Fight Club (occasionally intrusive (and has some dialogue) but fairly funky background music)
* Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
* The Hunt For Red October

As you gain more experience using your account you will come across the various programs out there.The most used of these is rbusers. If you type rbusers into your terminal you will see a list of users currently logged onto the system. Hey is also one of these programs. Hey is RedBricks version of instant messenger software (although we are implementing jabber now in addition hey). It enables users logged onto the system to send messages to each other. See the hey tutorial for more information. Another useful program is huh. If you type huh into your terminal you will see a list of the last few users who heyed you. The list of user written software is endless and you will come across loads of them on your travels.

UNIX
<!-- Please follow the same format when adding your username. These really should be in alphabetical order but who's going to do that? -->

drag0n
Friends in college said that I needed a nickname, probably because they're too lazy to say my full name "Diarmuid" and I find "Diarm" quite creepy, so basically, "dragon" popped into their heads and it stuck! I used be called siphi (for no particular reason, it was a random name I was known by onli ne), then changed to drag0n (with a zero). The zero is because the user "dragon" is allready taken on rb. But everyone loved the new name so I added the zero. If you hey the other dragon, you generally get a confused hey in response, so I generally have heys disabled. anyways...

kpodesta
Because that's my real name. I thought Redbrick was some email yoke - all else fails, I was getting a decent email address.

noelfitz
8 letter truncation of my real name (boring but true.)

svan
<u>S</u>arunas <u>Van</u>cevicius. First letter of name, then first 3 letters from surname.

fox_chic
Cause I'm an xphile and Mulder's first name is Fox. :)

bilco
Cause as a fresher I though it was the character's name from The Hobbit

art_wolf
Cool picture I have hanging up. Have had it for ages and its by Art Wolfe.

singer
I was a singer in a band. The guitarist mocked me for being the singer by calling me "singer". The nickname stuck. Non-Redbrick people address me as singer! My 2nd choice username was "scano".

shimoda
It was a character in a book (Illusions by Richard Bach) I read during my formative years. Another rb user thought the description of the protagonist was suited to me so I nabbed the name.

sandman
I didn't. It was assigned on the basis that a) I was asleep and b) I read comics, didn't I? Ironically, I hadn't read much Sandman at the time.

lithium
Coz I like the sound of it. And coz it goes crazy when you put it in water. And not because of the Nirvana song.

cammy
I was using it as a web handle long before I joined Redbrick. It comes from the name of one of my first roleplaying characters that wasn't just a bunch of stats. The name for that roleplaying character though, came from the computer game Streetfighter 2.

Well actually cammy was my second choice. I would have liked to use The_Dead_One but that exceeds the 8 character limit.

moridin
The most evil and therefore cool character in a series of books that I was reading. Said series of books has since degenerated into a mush of crap writing. Boo.

macbain
He wanted the username 'mcbain' but Karlos (mcbain) got it before him. Being original, Sarv decided that macbain would do instead, so he could forever confuse new users between himself and Karl.

montoya
The name is that of a character from the book "The Princess Bride" by William Goldman. The specific character is Inigo Montoya, a Spanish swordsman out for revenge against a 6-fingered man who killed Inigo's father.

thedara
My nick was given to me years before redbrick on irc (irc.phishy.net) I was the first person some americans had met called Dara and they
found that interesting for some reason or other and hence I became thedara.
On redbrick irc i'm known as Darz0re, It was a in-joke at the time when myself and dizer stuck z0re at the end of out names
hence thez0rekorp.com and z0re.org

elmer
My username came from my first ever email address(elmer@clubi.ie) which i chose based on the looney tunes character elmer fudd

drusilla
My nick was surprisingly enough, from the character on Buffy! Friends of mine in second year of school gave it to me when they noticed the similarities between myself and the insane vampire. Funnily, dru was my second nick on RedBrick, before that I was zerocool

cooker3
It is my username for the lab machines in the CA building, it's not to do with an obcession with cookers!

gizmo
My nick came from a combination of thinking gizmo was a pretty cool name due to that little flurry critter in Gremlins and also cns putting me on the spot on Clubs And Socs day when I first joined so that I couldn't think of anything else. Strange, but true.

exzantia
As many, many people have pointed out, my name seems like a random string of letters, and it kinda is... When I was signing up for a Yahoo mail account in '98 everything I tried was already taken. I was not having under-scores or numbers so I decided to come up with something that would always be available! I thus far have succeeded.

david
The year that I joined DCU Hasselhoff was given a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. With all the new challenges in my life at that time I found that he was someone I could look up to. I could admire his achievements. He was like an uncle to me. I grew up on Kinght Rider and am looking forward to the new movie coming out this year. And then when I got a little older and started noticing girls I got interested in Baywatch. I wanted to be the stud that he was on that show. Appropriately in 2000 when I joined redbrick he released one of his many hit albums in Germany - "The Magic Colleciton". So I chose david as my redbrick username because ... well actually its not that interesting really, its my name in real life.
