== Description ==
[[Image:Welmar.jpg|thumb|right]]Welmar was graciously loaned to the society by Stephen (stephenc@rb). The MUD server used to run on Enigma but wouldn't work on Prodigy due to endian issues or some such sillyness so it was decided to get a dedicated machine for it that wouldn't be affected by admins constantly shutting down and tearing apart Enigma. Welmar went live 23rd October 2002 and the MUD moved over to it on 29th October 2002 (at 18:39).

After the [[Great Hack of 2008]] DoC went off to get mud running on one of the linux machines.

Welmar was gracefully retired on the 21/11/08, it's last job passed off to sprout. It's currently sitting under a desk in the clubs & socs office while people try to find something to do with it.

===The end of the banner===

At the [http://gallery.redbrick.dcu.ie/phaxx/rbfreshers06/ 2006 freshers event], the canvas RedBrick banner was tied to railings outside the venue. It started raining, and we didn't think to take in the banner! It got sticky, the letters peeled off, the ink ran, and pretty soon we had a mess. To make matters worse, we folded it, leaving ink where ink shouldn't be.

===What the banner looks like now===

[[Image:ruinedredbrickbanner.jpg]]

===Design us a new banner!===

The RedBrick banner is important, we use it at many events every year. We need a new one, and we also need designs for a new one!

After '''July 15th''' we'll pick a design from this page, and get it printed.

===How to submit a banner design===
* Upload your image to the wiki with the [[Special:Upload]] page.
* Edit this page (use the "edit" link at the top!) and add your image to the bottom
==[[User:cammy|cammy]]==

I was using it as a web handle long before I joined Redbrick. It comes from the name of one of my first roleplaying characters that wasn't just a bunch of stats. The name for that roleplaying character though, came from the computer game Streetfighter 2.

Well actually cammy was my second choice. I would have liked to use The_Dead_One but that exceeds the 8 character limit.
It is my username for the lab machines in the CA building, it's not to do with an obcession with cookers!
==[[User:david|david]]==
The year that I joined DCU Hasselhoff was given a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. With all the new challenges in my life at that time I found that he was someone I could look up to. I could admire his achievements. He was like an uncle to me. I grew up on Kinght Rider and am looking forward to the new movie coming out this year. And then when I got a little older and started noticing girls I got interested in Baywatch. I wanted to be the stud that he was on that show. Appropriately in 2000 when I joined redbrick he released one of his many hit albums in Germany - "The Magic Colleciton". So I chose david as my redbrick username because ... well actually its not that interesting really, its my name in real life.

==[[User:drag0n|drag0n]]==
Friends in college said that I needed a nickname, probably because they're too lazy to say my full name "Diarmuid" and I find "Diarm" quite creepy, so basically, "dragon" popped into their heads and it stuck! I used be called siphi (for no particular reason, it was a random name I was known by onli ne), then changed to drag0n (with a zero). The zero is because the user "dragon" is allready taken on rb. But everyone loved the new name so I added the zero. If you hey the other dragon, you generally get a confused hey in response, so I generally have heys disabled. anyways...

==[[User:drusilla|drusilla]]==
My nick was surprisingly enough, from the character on Buffy! Friends of mine in second year of school gave it to me when they noticed the similarities between myself and the insane vampire. Funnily, dru was my second nick on RedBrick, before that I was zerocool

==[[User:elmer|elmer]]==
My username came from my first ever email address(elmer@clubi.ie) which i chose based on the looney tunes character elmer fudd

==[[User:exzantia|exzantia]]==
As many, many people have pointed out, my name seems like a random string of letters, and it kinda is... When I was signing up for a Yahoo mail account in '98 everything I tried was already taken. I was not having under-scores or numbers so I decided to come up with something that would always be available! I thus far have succeeded.

==[[User:fatwa|fatwa]]==

In first year, whilst learning to program, my friend Andrew wrote a program that printed out "That's a fatwa on you, mein freund".
I thought it was funny and it must have stuck in my head for redbrick registering. Also, it's short for "fat wanker".

==[[User:fox_chic|fox_chic]]==

Cause I'm an xphile and Mulder's first name is Fox. :)

==[[User:gizmo|gizmo]]==
My nick came from a combination of thinking gizmo was a pretty cool name due to that little flurry critter in Gremlins and also cns putting me on the spot on Clubs And Socs day when I first joined so that I couldn't think of anything else. Strange, but true.

==[[User:jesjes|jesjes]]==
My name is Jessica. And people from home call me Jesi, and at some stage during sixth year I decided I much more liked Jess. So when I got THE INTERNETS, I just called myself jesjes. It stuck.

==[[User:keloe|keloe]]==

I wrote down kehoe, my surname and an old nickname, on the slip. However, due to my incapability to write h's correctly, the admins read it as keloe.

==[[User:kpodesta|kpodesta]]==

Because that's my real name. I thought Redbrick was some email yoke - all else fails, I was getting a decent email address.

==[[User:lithium|lithium]]==

Coz I like the sound of it. And coz it goes crazy when you put it in water. And not because of the Nirvana song.

==[[User:macbain|macbain]]==
He wanted the username 'mcbain' but Karlos (mcbain) got it before him. Being original, Sarv decided that macbain would do instead, so he could forever confuse new users between himself and Karl.

==[[User:marvin|marvin]]==
There are three references here : Starvin Marvin from South Park, Marvin The Paranoid Android from Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy and Marvin the Martian from the Warner Bros cartoon. I'll leave it to the reader to decide which one was the greatest influence (hint: it wasn't Starvin Marvin).

==[[User:montoya|montoya]]==

The name is that of a character from the book "The Princess Bride" by William Goldman. The specific character is Inigo Montoya, a Spanish swordsman out for revenge against a 6-fingered man who killed Inigo's father.

==[[User:moridin|moridin]]==

The most evil and therefore cool character in a series of books that I was reading. Said series of books has since degenerated into a mush of crap writing. Boo.

==[[User:noelfitz|noelfitz]]==

8 letter truncation of my real name (boring but true.)

==[[User:p|p]]==

Back the old days of IOL/Indigo's IRC servers I used a variety of names, which all began with the letter p. Eventually, I ditched the different nicknames and used ^P^. Redbrick doesn't support weird characters though, so now it's just p. It also happens to be my middle initial.

==[[User:sandman|sandman]]==

I didn't. It was assigned on the basis that a) I was asleep and b) I read comics, didn't I? Ironically, I hadn't read much Sandman at the time.

==[[User:shimoda|shimoda]]==

It was a character in a book (Illusions by Richard Bach) I read during my formative years. Another rb user thought the description of the protagonist was suited to me so I nabbed the name.

==[[User:singer|singer]]==

I was a singer in a band. The guitarist mocked me for being the singer by calling me "singer". The nickname stuck. Non-Redbrick people address me as singer! My 2nd choice username was "scano".

==[[User:spock|spock]]==

I chose spock because I had no idea that it would follow me around for at least the next 10 years.
I didn't even know what Redbrick was when I was joining, and when I had a membership form thrust
in my face by Hyper on Freshers day 1996, we had three preferences for username. I put down "spock" as my first preference. It wasn't taken, and that is how I didn't end up with the username "data", or "benji".

==[[User:svan|svan]]==

<u>S</u>arunas <u>Van</u>cevicius. First letter of name, then first 3 letters from surname.

==[[User:thedara|thedara]]==

My nick was given to me years before redbrick on irc (irc.phishy.net) I was the first person some americans had met called Dara and they
found that interesting for some reason or other and hence I became thedara.
On redbrick irc i'm known as Darz0re, It was a in-joke at the time when myself and dizer stuck z0re at the end of out names
hence thez0rekorp.com and z0re.org

==[[User:wilburt|wilburt]]==

Long story, guys i used to know named me Wilburtino, i didnt really like it cos they were muppets. However, it grew on me over time. Wanted Wilburtino or Will as my username but they wouldnt let me :( so wilburt was the only one left. Like all rb usernames i think, they are spur of the moment. (or admin mistakes)

Installing Gallery On Redbrick

Fatwa:

[http://gallery.sourceforge.net Gallery] is an excellent piece of PHP software for your website for orgainsing and displaying photos.

Unfortantly it's not possible to install Gallery on redbrick and have it work straight away.

Download gallery and install it as instructed.
==Gallery 2==
Mostly this involves untarring it into some directory.
Now, you'll need to ask the admins to set up a MySQL account for you.
Then edit
gallery2/index.php
gallery2/main.php
gallery2/install/index.php

and add the #!/usr/local/bin/php
line as per below.

Then go to
http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~YOURUSERNAME/gallery2 (or whereever you intalled it)
and follow the nifty online installation program. At some stage it will ask you for the MySQL values that the
nice admins should have mailed you when they set up your datbase. You'll need a database name, a user name and a
password. Everything else: accept the defaults ( e.g. table prefixes ).
Ignore the bit about making a directory chmod 777; on redbrick PHP scripts run as you, so you have permission to write
to your own directory.

See the bit at the bottom of this page for adding a php.ini to allow uploading big files.

==Gallery 1==

You must then pass all the files through 'dos2unix' even if you downloaded the '.tar.gz' archive. You could probaly write a simple script to this. This is the key to getting the scripts to work.

To get '''any''' PHP web software running on redbrick you need to add '#!/usr/local/bin/php' to the beginning of the php file. To get Gallery to work, you don't need to add it to all files but only the files executed, specifically:

add_photos.php
add_photos_frame.php
album_permissions.php
albums.php
captionator.php
copy_photo.php
create_user.php
delete_album.php
delete_photo.php
delete_user.php
do_command.php
edit_appearance.php
edit_caption.php
edit_field.php
edit_thumb.php
extra_fields.php
gallery_remote.php
gallery_remote2.php
highlight_photo.php
index.php
login.php
manage_users.php
modify_user.php
move_album.php
move_photo.php
poll_results.php
progress_uploading.php
rename_album.php
reset_votes.php
resize_photo.php
rotate_photo.php
rss.php
save_photos.php
search.php
setup/phpinfo.php
setup/check_imagemagick.php
setup/check_mail.php
setup/check_netpbm.php
setup/check_versions.php
setup/diagnostics.php
setup/frame_test.php
setup/index.php
setup/session_test.php
slideshow.php
slideshow_low.php
sort_album.php
tools/find_orphans.php
upgrade_album.php
user_preferences.php
view_album.php
view_photo.php

Note: For Gallery2, you only seem to need to add the hashbang (#!/usr/local/bin/php) to 'install/index.php', 'index.php' and 'main.php'.
It's important that the hashbang line is the first line in the file and that the second line is the start of the standard php file, e.g.

<nowiki>#!/usr/local/bin/php</nowiki>

<?php

If you have any blank lines between them you'll get an error like:
Warning: session_start(): Cannot send session cookie - headers already sent by (output started at /webtree/gallery/install/index.php:3) in /webtree/gallery/install/index.php on line 83

Oh, BTW, ImageMagick and most of NetPBM is already installed on Redbrick so you won't need those binaries in your account locally.

=Gallery Remote=

If you want to get GalleryRemote working so you can upload pictures without using ftp or the webform, simply create a file called php.ini in the directory where you installed gallery (normally something like =/webtree/-username-/gallery=). The contents of php.ini should be:

[PHP]

output_handler =

; Whether to allow HTTP file uploads.
file_uploads = On

; Temporary directory for HTTP uploaded files (will use system default if not
; specified).
upload_tmp_dir = /home/associat/-letter-/-username-/tmp

; Maximum allowed size for uploaded files.
upload_max_filesize = 2M

Of course you should change the 'upload_tmp_dir' to the correct path. Thanks to [[User:Noel|Noel]] for this.

Illustrious Chairman, Justin/[[User: Cain|Cain]], originally joined redbrick to write an article
for An Tarbh.

==I was a BBS Virgin, by 'Caine' ==

There are many despised sub-cultures clinging to existence on campus. From the
DBES to CS students, these groups, ostracised from normal society, carry on
their lives away from public scrutiny. One of these groups, perhaps the most
secretive of them all, are those whose only interaction with society is on the
BBS. I'm sure you've seen them, huddled over their monitors in the computer
rooms talking and laughing to themselves as they send off another hilarious
missive to their fellow nerds across campus. Therefore in the interests of
investigative journalism, and to alleviate the boredom of a rainy afternoon, I
donned the sobriquet 'Caine' and went undercover on the BBS to discover just
what it is that is so funny.

The first thing I noticed as I logged on was the warm reception I got.
Despite not knowing what was going on I was warmly welcomed into their society.
I spent the first few minutes in observation, trying to follow their
conversation, which seemed to centre on one user called 'Rabbit'. Bored to
tears I changed the topic to the proposed November 14 SU walkout in an effort
to find out if anybody was angry. Instead, I got an alternative plan that
the SU would do well to consider, "kidnap Danny O'Hare and hold him to
ransom".

It was at this stage that I was approached by another user, 'Thalia', with whom I spent the next fifteen minutes arguing about the Union and why it never did anything, etc. This conversation challenged my
perceptions that these people knew nothing about what happened outside of the
computer rooms as I was roundly thrashed before Thalia departed leaving me
alone as all others had voted with their e-mail and slipped away from politics
to another chat-room. Not knowing how anything worked, I spent the next five
minutes trying to find the group again, which leaves me to thank 'Dauphin' for
letting me in. Unfortunately, before I could press my advantage Dauphin had
been stolen away by Mulder, from the Grattan building so I didn't get to
experience what this cybersex is all about, but I did watch with interest as
Dauphin and Mulder fornicated like rabbits over the next few minutes.

Meanwhile a fight had broken out between Jacques and Ericc that seemed to be
covering up a mountain of sexual tension between them. Egged on, however by
Bernice and Poster, Jacques found it difficult to be honest with Erricc and
she took refuge in vague insinuations about the size of Ericc's equipment (
which is rather small by her accounts). In the end, of course, love won out and
in a bizarre menage a quartre with Poster, Bernice and Jacuques and with me
looking on interestedly, Ericc did the business and departed pronouncing
himself well satisfied with the nights work. Dauphin and Mulder continued to
exchange poetry and smoke the proverbial cigarette for the next few minutes
before they too departed leaving me alone with Poster, Jacques and Bernice.
Needless to say I quickly departed the hormone filled chat room and scurried
home.

So the $64,000 dollar question, does it beat the bar? On the downside there
is no alcohol, a point which cannot be under-emphasised, and it is very
difficult to meet members of the opposite sex for anything more than fevered
typing. On the upside the inhabitants are friendly and they talk the same
bullshit sober that most of us need alcohol to talk. They also talk about the
same things we do, politics, sex, genital size, Jacque's astonishing knowledge
of sexual innuendo and the power rangers. I would highly recommend a look if
any of the said topics interest you. But be warned, it may be sad but it is
addictive.
Thanks to everyone I mentioned in this article and the few I didn't.
computer rooms as I was roundly thrashed before Thalia departed leaving me
alone as all others had voted with their e-mail and slipped away from politics
to another chat-room. Not knowing how anything worked, I spent the next five
minutes trying to find the group again, which leaves me to thank 'Dauphin' for
letting me in. Unfortunately, before I could press my advantage Dauphin had
been stolen away by Mulder, from the Grattan building so I didn't get to
expereience what this cybersex is all about, but I did watch with intrest as
Dauphin and Mulder fornicated like rabbits over the next few minutes.

Meanwhile a fight had broken out between Jacques and Ericc that seemed to be
covering up a mountain of sexual tension between them. Egged on, however by
Bernice and Poster, Jacques found it difficult to be honest with Erricc and
she took refuge in vague insinutations about the size of Ericc's eqiupment (
which is rather small by her accounts). In the end, of course, love won out and
in a bizarre menage a quartre with Poster, Bernice and Jacuques and with me
looking on intrestedly, Ericc did the business and departed pronouncing
himself well satisfied with the nights work.

On the downside there
is no alcohol, a point which cannot be under emphasised , and it is very
difficult to meet members of the opposite sex for anything more than fevered
typing. On the upside the inhabitants are friendly and they talk the same
bullshit sober that most of us need alcohol to talk. They also talk about the
same things we do, politics, sex, genital size, Jacque's astonishing knowledge
of sexual innuendo and the power rangers. I would highly recommend a look if
any of the said topics intrest you. But be warned, it may be sad but it is
addictive.
Thanks to everyone I mentioned in this article and the few I didn't.

I spent the first few minutes in observation, trying to follow their
conversation, which seemed to center on one user called 'Rabbit'. Bored to
tears I changed the topic to the proposed November 14 SU walkout in an effort
to find out if anybody was angry. Instead , I got an alternative plan that
the SU would do well to consider, "kidnap Danny O'Hare and hold him to
ransom".
Contracting

Fatwa: /* Umbrella Company */

This article is a basic FAQ about contract work.

== Whats the difference between working as a contract and a standard (PAYE) employee? ==

=== The Pros ===

* More money than an employee doing the same job as a PAYE worker.
* Flexibility to change jobs quickly.
* The self-employed fall into tax bracket 'S'. This means you pay 5% PRSI as opposed to about 13%.
* Ability to expense your..er...expenses.
* Ability to move between different types of work and constantly learn new things..

=== The Cons ===

* No Health insurance, pension, etc unless you get it yourself.
* The expectation that you can "hit the ground running". You're hired to be more productive than an unexperienced worker and you'd better deliver.
* Occasionally there can be periods of unemployment in between contracts.
* Occasionally resentment from full time employees. "Contractor scum. Getting paid twice as much for the same job I do..."

== What are the risks involved in contract work? / Is contracting for me? ==

=== Contract work is for you if... ===

* You are good with people. Contracting is more about being able to sell yourself then a standard job.
* You know your stuff and can communicate it effectively.
* You work well under pressure.
* You can pick up new concepts and ways of working quickly.

=== Contract work is not for you if... ===

* You have no savings or are bad with money. You will be paid more but the risk is that your contract may not be renewed. You need to be able to budget.
* You are risk averse. There is an amount of gambling on getting a contract extension or a new contract. If this will completely stress you out or you have a huge mortgage to pay then it may be better to stick to a stable job.
* You're a "clockwatcher". Contractors are expected to earn their keep. If you hang around waiting for the day to end you probably won't last long.

== I want to get into contracting. What type of company do I need to set up? ==

=== There are three main types of setups ===

==== Umbrella Company ====

An Umbrella company is essentially a payroll agency. They put you on their books for a monthly fee. You send them your monthly invoices and expenses; They collect the cash, do your monthly payroll, pay your tax, and transfer your wages into your accounts.
Example: [http://www.macs.ie/umbrella_services.html MACS Umbrella Services]

===== The Pros =====

* Hassle free.
* No need to set up a company.

===== The Cons =====

* Can be relatively expensive.
* Most payroll companies will not expense capital purchases. i.e.: Purchasing a computer for business use.

==== Sole trader ====

A Sole trader is a one-man band. You send out your own invoices, keep a record of your own expenses and pay yourself. At the end of the year you declare your taxes to the revenue.

===== The Pros =====

* Relatively Hassle free.
* No need to set up a company, though you should register a business name.
* If you earn less then &euro;20,000 you are not liable for tax.

===== The Cons =====

* Unlimited liability: Your personal assets are at risk from lawsuits or debts of the company. If you manage to burndown your employers offices you're personally liable for the cost.
* Most recruitement companies will not deal with a sole trader.
* Does not look professional.

==== Limited Company ====

A Limited Company is a registered company with limited liability and directors and all that grown up stuff.

===== The Pros =====

* Limited Liability: You are not personally responsible for business debts (unless you act illegally).
* Ability to expense capital purchases such as computer equipment for business use.
* As a director of a company you can transfer a large percentage of your income into a pension tax free.

===== The Cons =====

* Necessary to form a limited company. This can be done by a company formation service (Costs around &euro;350), or by yourself. Check http://www.cro.ie
* Limited companies have to stay in operation for at least 5 years. Even if you finish working for the company it still exists in its own right and you need to provide end of year accounts to the Revenue

== What do I do about tax? ==

Options:

* Work out your own tax.
* Get an accountant to do an end-of-year accounts and tell you how much tax you owe.
* Get an accountant to do your monthly returns and end of year accounts.

Whichever option or combination of options you choose, send your tax to the revenue. You can use the revenue online site or send it through the post.

There was a lengthy CV advice [https://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~art_wolf/rb/FUDforum2/index.php?t=tree&th=22&start=0 thread in redbrick.jobs] in June 2005. As the thread contained many useful tips for those sprucing up their CVs, the main points and arguments from the thread are reproduced here.

Back to [[Jobs]]

==Presentation==

It gives a better impression if your CV is nice and neat, and aesthetically pleasing. If it's a jumble of text, it makes it harder to read.

Design is content. Design means presenting the information in the most efficient way for a prospective employer. If you can't present well, people will find it hard to bother reading.

For headings, don't use underline. It impeeds legibility, and looks ugly. Use a san-serif font, such as Arial, and have 3 or 4 different types. For example, large heading, section heading and subsection. Keep it consistant and clear, and leave spacing around the headings.

While you shouldn't rely on colours to aid in the layout and understanding of your CV, colour, like other kinds of formatting, can greatly aid and help the design of your information. Many CVs will be printed in black and white, but there is no need to reduce the clarity on-screen because the printer may not be able to handle it. You can properly
use colour so that neither medium is losing out, and both are presented effectively and professionally.

==Date of Birth==

It was broadly agreed that the date of birth has no bearing on your emplyability, and as such, should not be included in a CV. Not knowing your date of birth also insulates employers from discrimination claims.

It was suggested that age may have a loose correlation with maturity and experience, which in turn can affect your relationship with coworkers. However, the general feeling was that age should be irrlevant, with references sufficing for these purposes.

==Projects==

Include a projects section listing projects you have worked on, including any interesting projects you have worked on independently and on your own time. Mention ones from which you have learnt things, which you could possibly talk about in an interview if asked.

==Technologies==
Do have a succint list of the technologies and programming languages, operating systems, etc. you have used in the past.

'''Don't''' have a list of every single computer program you've used in the past.

For example, you might want to mention that you've worked with CVS. You don't however want to list every single CVS client and
server version that you've used ( unless you're going for a job that large involves working directly with CVS ).

==References==

While there were arguments put forward that including references saves the potential employer from having to contact you again, it was generally agreed that it is not neccesary to include them.

Furthermore, most people felt that including "References available on request" was also un-neccessary, as this is assumed. If you pass the interviews, they will ask you for the references.

==General==

Have a brief summary at the top of the CV.

Ensure there is more of a focus on work experience than personal experience and hobbies & interests.

Look at the CV as a whole for five seconds. How much information do you get from it? Ideally, you should get a name, and an idea of which two lines hold an executive summary.

Give someone 10 seconds to look at your CV ( the average time an employer will view it for), what information was the person able to get in those 10 seconds? Did they get your main selling points (after all your CV is an advertisment selling YOU)

==Date of Birth==

==Projects==

Include a projects section listing projects you have worked on, including any interesting projects you have worked on independently and on your own time. Mention ones from which you have learnt things, which you could possibly talk about in an interview if asked.

==Technologies==

==References==

While there were arguments put forward that including references saves the potential employer from having to contact you again, it was generally agreed that it is not neccesary to include them.

Furthermore, most people felt that including "References available on request" was also un-neccessary, as this is assumed. If you pass the interviews, they will ask you for the references.

==General==

==Interview Tips==

Back to [[Interviews]]

===Preparing for Interview===
*Always research a company before an interview. You should not appear to be just looking for a job. Your interest and motivation will impress an interviewer and you will be able to explain what you can do for the company.
*Bear in mind that an interview is not just you appealing to a company, the company must also appeal to you. It is important to plan beforehand some of the questions you will ask. Prepare 3-5 meaningful questions. Good questions can greatly enhance the impact you make.

===Application forms===
*If you are asked to complete an application form, do so in a thorough manner. An answer such as "see CV" is not acceptable.

===First Impressions===
*The first impression you make on the interviewer is likely to have a strong impact on how the interview proceeds as well as on the interviewer s final conclusion about your suitability for the advertised position. So dress well, neatness is essential.

===Greetings===
*Walk confidently into the interview room and greet the interviewer with a firm handshake. Greet the interviewer with eye contact and a relaxed smile. Use the interviewer's name when greeting him or her.

===Answering the question===
*Answer the question that is being asked. Keep to the point and make as many positive remarks as possible to emphasise your good qualities. Do not misrepresent your qualifications, experience, or current salary. Always act as if you are going to be offered the job you are discussing.

===Be enthusiastic===
*Show enthusiasm and maintain good eye contact to emphasise your sincerity. If it is a first interview, do not ask starting salary, holidays, benefits etc. Your job is to sell yourself and highlight the positive contribution you could make to the company. Emphasise that you are primarily interested in the opportunity.
