IRC server is set up on redbrick, replacing ITCHY NUTS. 

Grimnar made his committee and admin mail publically readable making it possible
for people to read other member's passwords and committee business. 

[http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~funliam Funliam] is conceived sometime between Sept 98 and March 99. 
Libtut is conceived sometime in the first half of 99. 

Spinal resigns from committee around now.

2nd - Huey disusered for using password obtained from Grimnar's mail. 

22nd - Rag Week. 
23rd - Redbrick holds the first Alt.Rag.Ball in association with the SU in The Funnel. 
This starts the trend of Alternative Rag Balls. 
The Frames, Kid Icarus, and Palomine played, while Thayl and Singer djed. 
huey and anto (i think?) get thrown out for crowdsurfing. 

The SU also does a Rag Trip to Cork during Rag Week which is
great, but cost them a fortune, which is why they didn't attempt another one until 2002. 

Henry Gratten maps added to Shadowmap.

Associate membership introduced with CSD's consent.

4th - EGM.
Cthulhu and Whc are elected as admins. 

redbrick.house.of.jam is created and removed around this time. 
redbrick.things.tanya.hates created around now, but renamed to
redbrick.things.we.hate soon after. 

Jasper got a second account called mother and attempted to impersonate an
admin to get people's passwords. 

17th - Funliam campaign is mailed... 

22nd - Funliam.com is setup, funliam@rb is also setup around now.. 

25th - Funliam manifesto is mailed by Andy (jesus@rb). He questions if the funliam joke is
getting old yet.

AGM. 

PRO and Ents become two seperate positions on committee (again). 
Spock is elected as chair. 
Bootie is elected as secretary. 
Otto is elected as treasurer. 
Julie is elected as PRO. 
Celery is elected as ents officer. 
Bubble, Elmer, and Munchkin are elected as helpdesk. 
Bobb, Whc, and Cthulhu are elected as admins. 
Singer is elected as webmaster. 

Kpodesta makes a speech on behalf of Funliam. 
The Funliam account was setup by now. 

12th - First mention of Libtut. 

26th - "Remote Control", TV Themed event in the Funnel nightclub in association with the Aussie Soc. 
Inquiline and Things with Wings played upstairs while DJs Singer, Thayl, and [[Rbwiki_HomerJ|HomerJ]] played block rocking beats downstairs. 
huey and anto allowed into the funnel - bouncer buys huey/anto a pint after throwing them out earlier in the year!

14th - "[http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~kpodesta Shut up Karl]" - the epic begins. 

Megabytes, the dreadfully titled restaurant beside the Gym closes. 
This becomes the site of the new bigger gym, while
the gym's old location becomes an aerobics studio. Redbrick members mourn the loss of tasty BLTs in DCU.

Sometime in the summer of this year the redbrick site was redesigned by kpodesta and the rest of webgroup the
new machine Enigma was being setup. 

26th - the new CA building is officially opened by the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. 

Also at some point the Henry Gratten gets Macintosh labs to facilitate
the new Multimedia degree and the normal PCs get upgraded with HUGE
monitors. 

The old bar got a much needed major makeover at some point over the summer. 

The Wilde Space was torn down to make way for the Postgrad residences.

The fifth generation of brickies arrive in DCU. 
The first Redbrick booklet for newbies is made. 

New degree in the Faculty of Humanities (aka the Henry Gratten) called
Multimedia, kinda like CS with computers ;o) 

CA degree gets redesigned so that from this year on, when you go into
second year you choose one of three different streams of study. 
The number of students in first year of the CA degree doubles to ~300. 

==October==
First issue of campus newspaper The College View (known to some brikkies as the College Spiew) appears.

11th - Redbrick's new machine, Enigma, running [[Rbwiki_FreeBSD|FreeBSD]] is launched. Enigma was built in [[Rbwiki_DoC|DoC]] and cthulhu's house, with a lot of Brickies camping out getting the new server and website working the weekend of the launch. 

This replaces the previous server known as Mother, which suffered from general flakey hardware and [http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~valen/epic.txt OS issues]. 

12th - Freshers' Event in Break For The Border. 
Mint and Kid Icarus played followed by the resident DJ. 

26th - Halloween event in Bacchus. Thayl and Singer DJ. 

After the move to enigma users program doesn't support -l option. 
Numerous users install or write their own versions. 
Shadow writes his version of users which lists users in columns and shows number
of logins. Colour is added to the program with different colours for friends
and committee. 


==November==

5th - Trip to Cork. 
More precisely, to UCC. We stayed in a hostel and attended a weekend of
Linux (courtesy of [http://cork.linux.ie/article.php?story=20030201085829890 LAID] nerds) and partying in some nightclub called Stalin's. Leisureplexing was also enjoyed, although huey,p and tibor
weren't let because it was "21s" so cain, spock and others did the honourable (foolish)
thing and left in solidarity. Everyone else stayed and bowled and quasared.

Orly is elected as ents officer after Celery resigns. 
dot also ran for the position of ents. 

Newer version of Shadowmap written using curses library. 
Shadow officially gives it the name "shadowmap", previously it was just
"map", although ppl referred to it as shadow map. 

==December==

2nd - Intersocs event called "Apocalypse Quite Soon" in the Temple Bar Music Centre.
UCD, TCD, Maynooth, UL, Galway, and other Netsocs were in attendance. 

Wilt, Jilted, and Prospero played live. 

8th - First Christmas event in conjunction with the recently restarted Film Society along
with the Turf Appreciation Society. Ppl went to races in Shelbourne Park then retired
to club Mono (upstairs of Mean Fiddler). 

 

8th - "spockbot/fascist" is introduced in #lobby to give committee channel ops & kick people out if needed. 

 

14th - Barry (bubble) resigns from committee, but stays on webgroup. 

 

17th - "spockbot/fascist" is decommissioned by cthulhu because it was op'ing anyone and everyone.

5th - DCU students and students from other colleges and universities protest in Dublin city centre against a possible rise in college fees. DCUSU put buses on for the protest.

11th - Redbrick Table Quiz in the Old Bar. It was a great success with about 75 teams competing. The team "Fuckin' Class We Are" (which included jasper@rb) came first and won a DVD Player each. The team "Sun" (which included sandman@rb) came second and won a digital camera each. The team "The Cynics" (montoya's team) came third and got a lava lamp each for their trouble.

15th - Anti-war protest in Dublin attracts between 80,000 and 100,000 people.

18th - New Redbrick site design goes live.

18th - Redbrick Alt.rag Ball in Isaac Butt's.

19th - Redbrick brings Prof. Kevin Warwick to the Venue in DCU to give a talk.

26th - Lance Spitzner (from Honeynet project) gives talk for Redbrick on honeypots in CG-86.

12th - Architecture meeting for admins to discuss Redbrick's admin issues.

The AGM was held at 8pm (previous years it was 6.30 or 7) apparently because some of the committee were on INTRA or else because it was the earliest they could get the room.

22nd - Prodigy uptime reaches 131 days before a power cut stops it.

21st - Special Olympics starts in Ireland. DCU hosts some events.

20th - Deathray becomes the primary login server, all logins now accepted at login.redbrick.dcu.ie, redbrick.dcu.ie is no more.

29th - Deathray is renamed carbon. Its cooler and it has "rb" in it. Apparently admins did a
"grep '.*rb.*' /usr/share/lib/dict/words | less" and thought that carbon was the pick of the bunch.

9th - Google celebrates its 5th Birthday

23rd - Prodigy is down for two days for a complete reinstall/upgrade of Solaris.
After the reboot ftp is disabled permanently spelling the end of ftp for redbrick.
Users must now use scp

25th - Prodigy comes back online, some stuff does work "Mail Deliveries, IMAP, Webtree access, Webserver, Mailman, IRC, [[Rbwiki_MySQL|MySQL]]" and some stuff doesnt "Postgresql,[[Rbwiki_SpamAssassin|SpamAssassin]], Peered News, Webmail"
Prodigy should be fully operational in about a week.

8th - Clubs & Socs Day
The 9th generation of Brickies join. Redbrick signs up ~200 new members.
A Redbrick booklet was also available. (2.6M)

Redbrick and Filmsoc are once again relegated to the upstairs of the Hub for the second year running.
All Clubs & Socs had to use and official book w/ receipts, to sign up members.

14th - The redbrick events page is created.
Now members can see upcoming events,posters and pictures from previous events.

15th - Redbrick E.G.M - The first E.G.M of the year was held @ 5pm in QG13.
Positions up for grabs were Treasurer and System Administrator.
Mael was elected Treasurer replacing Dimples.
Tuama was elected Admin replacing Colmmacc.

He was found hiding in a 6ft x 8ft hole in the ground.

Dax.redbrick.dcu.is is setup as a machine for use by CTYI (Centre for Talented Youth in Ireland). This was one of the machines donated by the School of Computer Applications to Redbrick.

Foot and Mouth emerges in the UK for the first time in 20 years. Precautions are taken in the UK and Ireland which includes cancelling of unnecessary events.

A few days of downtime due to a corruption of the /usr disks. Replacement disks from the soon to be installed RAID array are used. It takes a while to get everything (website content, mailing lists, etc..) up and running again and some members become as grouchy as Oscar the Grouch.

Huh is written by Colmmacc and installed on the system. This program allows users to see the last five ppl that heyed them. Prior to this users had to just mass hey their friends asking who heyed or hey shadow and ask him to check his logs :o)

Redbrick along with the SPC and other volunteers again turned up very early in the morning to collect for charity. The collection was in aid of the Rape Crisis Centre and the Childrens' Hospital.
Cokane starts a postathon on the boards with Scrawny and gets disusered for an hour by bubble.

Dax.redbrick.dcu.is is setup as a machine for use by CTYI (Centre for Talented Youth in Ireland). This was one of the machines donated by the School of Computer Applications to Redbrick.

Foot and Mouth emerges in the UK for the first time in 20 years. Precautions are taken in the UK and Ireland which includes cancelling of unnecessary events.

A few days of downtime due to a corruption of the /usr disks. Replacement disks from the soon to be installed RAID array are used. It takes a while to get everything (website content, mailing lists, etc..) up and running again and some members become as grouchy as Oscar the Grouch.

Huh is written by Colmmacc and installed on the system. This program allows users to see the last five ppl that heyed them. Prior to this users had to just mass hey their friends asking who heyed or hey shadow and ask him to check his logs :o)

==March==

6th - Redbrick begins weekly tutorials in LG25 of the CA Building.
The first two tutorials are about writing webpages in HTML and using FTP to upload them to redbrick. The third tutorial showed people how to setup Windowmaker and KDE on their Solaris accounts in CA, as well as giving a basic introduction to commandline UNIX.

9th - Galway trip was planned for this date but cancelled due to Foot and Mouth (and numbers).

13th - redbrick.test newsgroup is setup for a helpdesk tutorial.

Confirmed case of F&M in the Republic of Ireland, on the border between Louth and the North.

25th - Magluby introduces [[Rbwiki_OpBot|OpBot]] to Redbrick IRC. Previously he had been screening a chat session and manually logging stuff.

26th - Talks given about HEAnet by HEAnet ppl, and about the history of the internet in Ireland and where it's heading by Tom Murphy of Spin Solutions.

31st - redbrick.design is setup.

2nd - Redbrick gives a Macromedia Flash and SQL tutorial in LG25.

7th - [[Rbwiki_OpBot|OpBot]] becomes [[Rbwiki_StopGap|StopGap]].

9th - Redbrick gives PHP tutorial in LG25.

11th - redbrick.karl.and.sheila is setup.
Kpodesta and Sheila frequently had their own threads (or threads they made their own) on the boards so after many calls from Odyssey of "Get a room", Drjolt gave them the next best thing, their own board.

11th - redbrick.odyssey is setup.
Many ppl had suggested over the years that Odyssey get his own board. Drjolt finally imprisoned him in his own board. He wasn't able to post to any other board bar this one.

17th - AGM.
Thor is elected as chair.
Moridin is elected as secretary.
Tibor is elected treasurer.
Magluby is elected ents officer.
Montoya is elected as PRO.
Phil, Mark, and Cns are elected as admins.
Colmmacc is elected as webmaster.

17th - Redbrick anniversary/post-AGM event in Conways of Parnell St.
Some of the founders and members from years past turn up.
Table quiz is held and a birthday cake is served.
Afterwards a few hardy souls retire to downstairs part of Bacchus (Aquarium).

21st - The Taoiseach of Ireland, Bertie Ahern, comes to DCU to talk about the work done by Redbrick, after we won the BICS award and got the Sun E450 sponsorship.
He also comes for the launch of DCU's strategic plan but Redbrick had him booked to come first :o)
The Taoiseach referred to a [[Rbwiki_BrickNews|BrickNews]] post by [[Rbwiki_DoC|DoC]], saying 'beer is what redbrick's all about!'. The non-drinking [[Rbwiki_DoC|DoC]] curses the non-existence of a sarcastic smiley.

26/27th - redbrick.computing.programming is removed.

31st - Redbrick holds Internet workshop for classes of local primary school children in LG25.

1st - The internet workshops for school children continue on the 1st, 8th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and the 21st of this month.

15th - Access to tolka finally ends and students must use camac.

30th - First proper meeting of the cluster group project that Redbrick is doing for CA.

20th - 6 Redbrick members enter the Big Brother board.
They are david, emperor, huey, redgiant, shadow, and thayl.

23rd - redbrick.bigbrother.diaryroom.username boards are added for each contestant.
redbrick.bigbrother.diaryroom board is removed.

17th - Shadow wins Redbrick Big Brother.

Redbrick sign up about 750 people on the day and an estimated 85-90% of them are freshers. The Green Party Society is founded this year.

11th - An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, officially opens the Hub, despite it being "opened" by Tom from the first Big Brother last year. Shane [[Rbwiki_McGowan|McGowan]] and the Popes play at the "Grand Grand opening of the Hub". Attendance at the event is low.

15th - The new login server Prodigy comes online.
The seventh generation of brickies log on for the first time.

15th - Redbrick Freshers event in the Temple Bar Music Centre.
Turn and Bijou play followed by a dj.

16th - First redbrick tutorial of the year held in LG25.
Freshers are shown how to use redbrick's basic facilities such as chat.
