*21st-23rd - Redbrick is taken offline due to maintenance to DCU's power systems. This opportunity is used to move [[Worf]] over to [[Azazel]] and to officially launch it as our primary login server.

* 4th-7th - Air-conditioning malfunctions in the server room. All servers except Azazel and Deathray are taken offline.

==July==
* 12th - Brief downtime on 10.04 machines to apply kernel updates.
* 19th - Brief downtime on Daniel and Murphy to apply kernel updates.

==August==
*22th - Unexpected Downtime on Azazel.

==September==
* 18th - Redbrick's new Logo is revealed through an update on the wiki.
* 20th-22nd - Redbrick sets up a table in the Hub for Orientation week. Various Redbrick services are demonstrated. Matrix mode videos attract attention. Our server room also receives a much needed clean-out. This results in our iMac G3 finding a new home.
* 26th - Redbrick launches its new website. The URL to the dev website is leaked (found in the public logs) several hours before the launch.
* 29th - One of our switches was knocked out by power surges effecting DCU. This caused unexpected downtime of services on some of our servers.

*4th & 5th - Clubs and Societies days. The 17th generation of Redbrick members join. Registrations and Renewals are processed using a barcode scanner found in the server room. 117 new members join.
*6th - The Introduction to Redbrick Talk is held in LG25. Followed by the Redbrick freshers ball with a DJSoc DJ in the Slipper.

*5th - "What's the Bright Idea" by the Undergraduate Awards is held in the Odessa as a celebration of young people and their bright ideas. A number of members attend, including committee members.
*8th - The Intersociety Christmas Party is held in The Slipper. Starting at 6, it was held in association with ArtSoc, Gamessoc, EngSoc, Airsoft, Paranormal Soc and Strange Things. Food, cake, presents, Santa and some grand pints featured during the night.

== Description ==

Ceilingcat was funded by the SPC in 2007. Prior to it's arrival the room had a 21" CRT taking up most of the desk, and various old desktop machines, none of which seemed to actually work.

To solve this werdz, lil_cain & receive picked pretty much the cheapest parts they could find, along with the cheapest 22" LCD screen they could find.

Ceilingcat was purchased by receive, and assembled by werdz. It's mainly used to burn disks, and use firefox, but it has also been used for extra storage, testing etc. We used it a couple of times to netboot other machines, and to host a Solaris VM which was used to kickstart [[Murphy]]. Not only that, but it has a very loud sound system that coconut and sonic like using in order to relieve [[deathray]]-related stress.

In early 2010 it was connected to the new Dell Powervault disk array ([[Worf]]; we needed to see if the damn thing would turn on), so for a few brief weeks of its life it had the best set of disks of any Redbrick machine, and possibly the best set of disks of any DCU machine.

As of November 2011, Ceiling Cat was transferred from the server room to the common room (N109). Its HDD was formatted, and Ubuntu 11.10 installed along with XBMC.

As of April 2012, Ceiling Cat returned triumphant to the newly cleaned and organized server room where it serves its original purpose as an admin desktop machine.

The name given to the leadership of Redbrick. Elected every year at the Annual General Meeting it is composed of 12 members: three admins, two helpdesk, Webmaster, a first year rep, a Secretary, PRO, Ents Officer, Treasurer and Chairperson. The First Year Rep is elected at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), usually held during Clubs & Socs Week at the start of October. You must be a first year member to run for this position. All members of the committee are given ops in #lobby while the admins, along with previous system administrators still in the root group, hold [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_user root]. The webmaster may also hold root, upon passing a root competency test.

They are the Society's most popular target for abuse and insults and work tirelessly and without compensation for the Society they love so much. A list of past and present Committee members can be found at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/about/committee/

An alternative view of the Committee is that it is a collection of the power-mad, the arrogant, the popular and the insulting. All members have their own opinions on that matter but most will agree that without the Committee Redbrick would not be able to function, and for that, and perhaps that alone, they deserve thanks.

A visual overview of who did what, when.

This gets less accurate the further back you go in time - I was working off the [[Committee]] page, making guesses at who resigned, when. 2006 onwards should be fairly accurate (working from memory). Feel free to make any corrections (it's a pig of a table, though, so you might want to work on it offline, and abuse the Show Preview function a bit).

At the very least, it shows the sheer number of people (and man hours) who have been involved in running Redbrick at one point or another.

Isaac702: Provisional Information.

The Common Room (N109) is a room which members of Redbrick and Engineering Soc will have exclusive access to.
It is planned to open early November 2011. 

Access to N109 will operate by using a Swipe Card system. Access cards can be requested from the Committees of both societies. 
Members must agree to a set of rules before receiving an access card for the common room. 

=Areas=
The Common Room is divided into 4 distinct areas.
* Kitchen Area
* Dinning / Computer Area.
* Lounge Area
* N109A

==Kitchen Area==
The Kitchen Area includes a Fridge which members can store items in. All items should be labeled. 
We also have one of the few student accessible Microwaves on campus. 
Tableware and Cutlery is provided. We ask that these are put into the Dishwasher after use. 
We will also attempt to provide a supply of Tea, Coffee and Milk at all times. 
This area also includes several notice boards which are used to advertise DCU and society events. 

==Dinning / Computer Area.==
This area includes several tables and chairs. 
It also includes 4 computers running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with an LXDE desktop environment. 

==Lounge Area==
The Lounge Area includes 2 couches and our Tv. 
A selection of magazines (eg. Times & Uptime) will also be stored here. 
There is strictly no eating in this area. 

==N109A==
N109A will open to members at some point in the future. This area is intended to give members access access to equipment which they can use for personal and university projects.

*21st-23rd - Redbrick is taken offline due to maintenance to DCU's power systems. This opportunity is used to move [[Worf]] over to [[Azazel]] and to officially launch it as our primary login server.

* 20th-22nd - Redbrick sets up a table in the Hub for Orientation week. Various redbrick services are demonstrated. Matrix mode videos attract attention. Our server room also receives a much needed clean-out. This results in our iMac G3 finding a new home.
* 26th - Redbrick launches its new website. The url to the dev website is leaked (found in the public logs) several hours before the launch.
* 29th - One of our switches was knocked out by power surges effecting DCU. This caused unexpected downtime of services on some of our servers.

*4th & 5th - Clubs and Societies days. The 17th generation of redbrick members join. Registrations and Renewals are processed using a barcode scanner found in the server room. 117 new members join.
*6th - The Introduction to Redbrick Talk is held in LG25. Followed by the Redbrick freshers ball with a DJSoc DJ in the Slipper.
*9th - Redbrick launches its new [https://webmail.redbrick.dcu.ie webmail] interface using Roundcube.
*13th - Redbrick's Admin Training returns for another year with an Introduction to Linux.

The Java Classpath is a list of the directories and files on the disk that the java development kit will scan when compiling a program. 
These directories and files contain classes that can then be used in your program. 

This can be added or modified on Windows by following the following steps. 

1) Open My Computer (Computer) 
2) Right click and select properties. 
3) Select Advanced Systems Settings from the left navigation bar. 
4) Open the Advanced Tab of the Systems Properties Window. 
5) Select Environment Variables. 
6) If class path already exists select it and click edit otherwise click new. 
7) Enter CLASSPATH as the variable name. 
As the variable value enter the following: "C:\Program Files\Redbrick;C:\Program Files\Redbrick\*;." 

Now when you run javac it will check the C:\Program Files\Redbrick directory for any class or jar files and include them in your project. 
You will need to close and reopen any terminals you are currently using as it does not affect the current session.

The name given to the leadership of Redbrick. Elected every year at the Annual General Meeting it is composed of 12 members: three admins, two helpdesk, Webmaster, a first year rep, a Secretary, PRO, Ents Officer, Treasurer and Chairperson. The First Year Rep is elected at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), usually held during Clubs & Socs Week at the start of October. You must be a first year member to run for this position. All members of the committee are given ops in #lobby while the admins, along with previous system administrators still in the root group, hold [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_user root]. The webmaster may also hold root, upon passing a root competency test.

They are the Society's most popular target for abuse and insults and work tirelessly and without compensation for the Society they love so much. A list of past and present Committee members can be found at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/about/committee/

An alternative view of the Committee is that it is a collection of the power-mad, the arrogant, the popular and the insulting. All members have their own opinions on that matter but most will agree that without the Committee Redbrick would not be able to function, and for that, and perhaps that alone, they deserve thanks.

Installing Drupal

[http://drupal.org/ Drupal] is an open source content management system.

==Installation==
Download your preferred version of Drupal to your public_html folder. 
Extract the tar.gz with the following command.
tar -pzxf drupal-$version.tar.gz
This will extract drupal into a folder with the name drupal-$version. 
You can now rename the folder or move the files to where you see fit.
mv drupal-$version drupal

To complete the installation follow the steps onscreen at http://redbrick.dcu.ie/~username/drupal

==Enabling Proxy Support==
At the time of writing (June 2011) Drupal does not have proxy support by default.
However there is a patch which will add support for it to the current version of Drupal 7.

Without proxy support on redbrick Drupal is unable to use automatic updates and module installation.

To apply this patch follow the following instructions.
cd ~/public_html/drupal/
wget http://drupal.org/files/issues/7881-proxy-please-341.patch
chmod u+w ./sites/default/
patch -p1 < ./7881-proxy-please-341.patch
chmod u-w ./sites/default/

Then add the following lines to the bottom of ~/public_html/drupal/sites/default/settings.php
$conf['proxy_server'] = 'http://proxy.dcu.ie';
$conf['proxy_port'] = 8080;
$conf['proxy_exceptions'] = array('127.0.0.1', 'localhost');

==Changing the location of temporary files==
By default Drupal stores temporary files created when a module or theme is installed are placed in a folder in /tmp/. In a shared hosting environment such as Redbrick it cannot be guaranteed that this folder is not already in use by another user.

For this reason you should change the location of Drupal temporary files. 
To change your Drupal Temporary Directory follow the following instructions.

Log in to your Drupal admin account. 
Click Configuration in the top navigation bar. 
Then proceed to Meida - File System. 
In the box marked Temporary directory replace "/tmp" with "tmp". 

Temporary files will now be stored in the tmp directory within your Drupal install.

Web chat

A new webchat client was rolled out on redbrick in September 2009.

It is based upon qwebirc which is an AJAX IRC client and is the default webchat client on quakenet.

== How to Login ==
Visit [http://webchat.redbrick.dcu.ie Redbrick WebChat]. 
You will be prompted to login to [[IRC]] with your Redbrick Username and Password using pubcookie. Enter your username and password. 
Once you are logged in click "Connect". 
Webchat should load and automatically join you into #lobby. 

== Webchat Commands ==
Most of the commands Webchat uses are the same as the other IRC clients on redbrick. 
For examples of some of these commands see the article on [[IRC]]. 

== Connecting to channels automatically ==
By default you will automatically join #lobby. 
If you wish to override this functionality once you have logged in with pubcookie remove &channels=lobby from the end of the url and reload the page. 
You will now be prompted for your nickname and the channels you wish to join. 
If you want to join multiple channels the list should be comma separated. (eg. #lobby,#intersocs,#bots,...). 

This will only take effect for the current session and will have to be repeated each time you use webchat.

The name given to the leadership of Redbrick. Elected every year at the Annual General Meeting it is composed of 13 members: three admins, three helpdesk, Webmaster, a first year rep, a Secretary, PRO, Ents Officer, Treasurer and Chairperson. The First Year Rep is elected at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), usually held during Clubs & Socs Week at the start of October. You must be a first year member to run for this position. All members of the committee are given ops in #lobby while the admins, along with previous system administrators still in the root group, hold [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_user root]. The webmaster may also hold root, upon passing a root competency test.

They are the Society's most popular target for abuse and insults and work tirelessly and without compensation for the Society they love so much. A list of past and present Committee members can be found at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/about/committee/

An alternative view of the Committee is that it is a collection of the power-mad, the arrogant, the popular and the insulting. All members have their own opinions on that matter but most will agree that without the Committee Redbrick would not be able to function, and for that, and perhaps that alone, they deserve thanks.

Isaac702: Update to include ssh-copy-id and changing ssh passphrases.

SSH-Keys are used to allow passwordless access to a machine. It uses an unique host key to identify who you are.

To use this you will need to have ssh on your current machine.

==Linux SSH-Keys==
===Creating the Key===
First of all, you will need to create your secret key which will remain on the machine you are ssh'ing from. This is done by typing:
ssh-keygen -t dsa
This will generate the public and private keys. You will be asked where you wish to store the key. Just press enter to accept the default location.

You will then be asked for a passphrase. A passphrase will help to stop people who get access to your console getting access to different accounts. Its basically to help make it more secure. Once you have entered your passphase , you will be asked to re-type your passphrase. You can just just press enter if you don't want to use a passphrase.

===Copying the Key to Redbrick===
Now you will then need to copy your public key (~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub) to the server you wish to ssh to. Redbrick's machines have a common home directory so you only need to transfer your ssh-key once.

Two options for transferring your key are outlined bellow;

====Option 1====
ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub username@login.redbrick.dcu.ie

This will append your key to your authorized_keys file on redbrick.

====Option 2====

scp ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub username@login.redbrick.dcu.ie:.ssh/

This will put the file in the ~/.ssh folder of your account on the machine you want to ssh to.

You will need to log in to the machine you want to ssh to. Just use ssh as you normally would for the moment:
ssh username@login.redbrick.dcu.ie

You will still be prompted for a password at this stage. Once you are on other machine, you need to move into the .ssh directory cd .ssh. You will have to add the line in the id_dsa.pub into the authorized_keys file. The easiest way to do this is to simple cat the i d_dsa.pub and put the results into the authorized_keys file i.e:
cat id_dsa.pub >> authorized_keys

Once all that is done, then all that remains to do is to remove the id_dsa.pub on the machine you wish to ssh to rm ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub.

===Changing your Passphrase===
From time to time you may wish to change the passprhase on your ssh-key. To do this run the following command
ssh-keygen -f ~/.ssh/id_dsa -p
It will prompt you for your current passphrase. Once you have typed your current passphrase it will ask you for a new passphrase. You will then be asked to re-enter it to validate it.

The next time you connect to redbrick it should use this new passphrase.

==Windows SSH-Keys with Putty==

You will need to open the Key Generator program usually located in the same menu as Putty.exe. If you do not have this program, you can download it from:

http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/puttygen.exe

This is what will generate the public and private keys.

When the program loads up, you will be faced with a a small number of options on the the base of the screen. Select DSA as the key type. It will automatically select 1024 for the number of bits but you can change this number to whatever you want. When you have filled in this information, click on "Generate".

You will be asked to move the mouse around the blank space on the screen. The more you move the mouse, the more random the keys will be. It will generate the keys straight away. You can then enter a passphrase (if you wish) and then confirm it by typing it again. Then click "save private key" to save this key. You will be asked to give the program a destination folder to save the key to and you will need to give it a filename. Do the same for "save private key".

Now once you have saved your keys, press "Load". If you gave it a passphrase, you will need to type it in now. At the top you will see the public key that you will need to copy in to your authorised keys. Highlight it and right click and select copy. Then you'll have to log on to the server you wish to be able to ssh easily too. You will need to go to putty.exe.

You will still be prompted for a password at this stage. Once you are on other machine, you need to move into the .ssh directory cd .ssh. You may need to create a authorized_keys file by doing the following :
touch ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.
Then all that is left to do is to put the public key into the authorized_keys file.
cat >> authorized_keys

You should still have the public key in your buffer, if not just copy it again from the top of the Key Generator program. Just right click on your terminal and you will see it being printed onto the screen. Then hit Ctrl^D.

Now when you run putty.exe, all you have to do is go to connection:SSH:Auth and click on "Browse" to tell putty where your private key is. You can save your settings so you don't have to do this everytime. Now when you log in you will either get in without a password or only have to give your passphrase. Don't forget to reload the private key in the key generator next time you log on to your computer.

Mercurial is a version control system, like [[svn|subversion]] in that it manages changes in your code, but different in that it's designed to be distributed. Git and bazaar are also distributed version control systems. Mercurial is also written in python, which is [http://xkcd.com/353/ cool]. It's built in web interface is also excellent.

==Setting Up On RedBrick ==

All the setup needs to be done on murphy, since that's the webserver. After that, you can access your code from anywhere.

First, we need to setup the repo that will contain the code
receive@murphy (~) % hg init hgrepo

Open the index.cgi in nano (or any other text editor) and on the second to last line replace /YOUR/HOME/DIR/YOUR/REPO with the location of the repo you created. For me, this is /home/member/r/receive/hgrepo - the location will depend on where your home directory is. Optionally, replace "repository name" with something cooler.

=== Step 3 - Set Up htaccess ===

You can use this htaccess file as a sample, but you'll need to make a few changes. The rewrite base should be set to the location on the webserver you created the hg directory. If you've been following the same example names I used it will be ~username/hg

Also, you'll need to set the location you're going to use for your htpasswd file.

This will prompt you to enter your new password twice.

In the .htaccess you created earlier replace the Options for password control with the following:

== Cloning the Repo ==

Once all this is done you should be able to login at https://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~username/hg - of course you won't see any code there yet.

Go to whatever computer you want to start writing code on and clone a copy of the repo

andrew@laptop:~ $ hg clone https://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~receive/hg/

Now I have a copy of the repo on my laptop I can work on. You should [http://mercurial.selenic.com/guide/ read the guide] to see all the commands that are available, but the basics you'll need are hg add and hg commit.

== Pushing ==

Before you are able to push changes to your repo you will need to specify which users have permission to do so. You will need to add the following lines to the configuration for your repo (~/hgrepo/.hg/hgrc).

allow_push = *

If you wish to only give certain users permission to push changes to your repo replace * with their usernames.

Now once you make changes you can push them back to your repo on RedBrick.

You can now look at the changes on the web interface :)
