In 1997 a user by the name of Spike arrived on Redbrick. This writer cannot remember how Spike came to be on Redbrick for he was not, nor ever had been a student, but someone gave him a password and he was one of the best known Redbrick personalities and a Table regular.

Spike merits an entry in the Encyclopedia for the confused events surrounding his permanent disuserment and the shutting down of Redbrick. What is beyond question is that Spike hacked files in other colleges, allegedly TCD and Glasgow. His carrying out of this deed was traced back to his Redbrick account and great was the wrath and anger of CSD who pulled the plug on Redbrick and threatened to close it down. As it was the system was shut down for three weeks and restored only with several conditions.

The exact series of events has always been a bone of contention with Spike claiming that it wasn't all his fault, a stance for which there was some support, and others claiming that he was solely responsible. As a result Spike was banned from Redbrick and DCU's environs by the Committee.

At the time there was a great deal of anger towards Spike among the membership but time has healed many wounds though his name is still cursed by some of the older members.
>another cockup on your story.

Shaun Neary was found with a cracked version of the password file belonging
to a TCD server. I'm not totally sure how he was tracked down but it came
from the fact that he was trading cracked passwords on IRC and somebody in
TCD heard about him, traced his logins back to Glasgow, whose admins went
ballistic they had somebody like him on their systems. They were upset at
being accused of harbouring a hacker and traced his logins back to DCU
whose admins (CSD) went ballastic in turn. Initally CSD didn't have a Shaun
Neary on their books and believed it to be an alias for another well-known
redbrick user. I recall setting them straight on this fact (otheriwse that
innocent student could have been kicked out of DCU) and disusered Spike.

The Redbrick newsgroups, "the boards", are essentially an electronic bulletin board. People can post messages asking for help, talking about the latest news item, discussing computing or just generally ranting about anything at all. The newsgroups have remained highly active over the years, though they tend to be more popular among older generations of Brickies, while the younger, trendier crowd are more likely to hang out on IRC.

Accessing the boards
To gain access to the newsgroups, simply type "news" at the prompt.

Initially, you won't be subscribed to any of the newsgroups and your screen will be empty, so to see them hit L (shift + l) and then *, followed by return. This should display all of the boards.

The groups you are not subscribed to will be marked with U, which will be all of them if this is your first time. Move up and down the list to view the available groups. If you wish to subscribe to a group simply highlight the board and press the s key.

Navigating
To navigate the groups use the up and down arrow keys. When you find a board that you want to read, hit the return key. You will then see a list of posts by other users. You can scroll up and down through the post with the u and d keys respectively.

Highlight the post you wish to read using the arrow keys and then hit return. You will now be able to read that user's post. To go back to the list of posts hit h. To back to the list of boards hit q.

You will notice that all responses to a particular topic appear under the heading for that topic. This series of messages is called a thread.

Posting
On the main screen highlight the group you want to post to and press the p key. When asked if you want to post, press y. It will now display the name of the board you're post to, so hit return. The next option is to give your post a title. Make it as clear as possible. When you're done, press the return key.

Now your text editor will launch and you can type your post. When you are done, save the file in the usual manner. The default text editor is Nano, so this will be ctrl + x, and then y to save and quit.

You will be asked to confirm that you want to post, simply press y again.

Replying/Following up
Replying to someone else's post is very straightforward. Whilst viewing the post, simply hit the f key. The options from there on are very similar to posting yourself, so simply follow the instructions as before.

If you wish to reply directly to the user by mail, hit the r key instead.

Saving
When you are reading a posting, and you want to save it, hit the o key. You'll then be asked what filename you'd like to save it to. Simply enter where you would like the file to be saved and what you want it saved as i.e.

~/savedPost

Then just hit the return key and the post is saved.

Crossposting
Sometimes you may want to post the same article to more than one newsgroup, because the article may be of interest to more than one audience or you want to get a wider response. If you simply post copies of the article in the usual way to each newsgroup, it not only takes more of your time but anyone subscribed to both groups sees the message twice, which can be pretty annoying. ;)

The crossposting mechanism allows you to post one copy of the article simultaneously to more than one newsgroup. With some newsreaders, including slrn, reading a crossposted article in one group marks it as read in the other groups, if you read more than one of the groups in question, you see the article only once. Crossposting is always preferable to making multiple separate identical postings.

To crosspost an article, start by posting as usual to one of the newsgroups in which you want the article to appear. Look at the headers of the article. For example the headers of this post are as follows:

Newsgroups: redbrick.babble
From: "Mr.Sephiroth" <Moridin@3l33t.RedBrick.cx>
Subject: Re: Website hosting
References: <slrnae2607.gus.henough@Prodigy.redbrick.dcu.ie>
Reply-To: moridin@redbrick.dcu.ie
Followup-To:

The top line, Newsgroups: specifies the groups that this message will get posted to. Now, suppose I want to post this both to redbrick.babble and redbrick.help. In that case the headers need to be amended to the following:

Newsgroups: redbrick.babble,redbrick.help
From: "Mr.Sephiroth" <Moridin@3l33t.RedBrick.cx>
Subject: Re: Website hosting
References: <slrnae2607.gus.henough@Prodigy.redbrick.dcu.ie>
Reply-To: moridin@redbrick.dcu.ie
Followup-To:

Now the message will go to redbrick.babble and redbrick.help. You need to make sure that there are no spaces between the names of the groups on the newsgroups line, i.e. it's just comma delimited.

Followup articles normally appear in the same newsgroups as the original article. The author of the followup article can change this by editing the Newsgroups: line in the header. The author of the original article can also change this, by editing the Followup-To: line, which is normally blank. If the Followup-To: line is not blank, all followup articles appear in the specified newsgroup.

This is commonly done in two situations. First, the author of the article may want to attract the attention of readers of several newsgroups, but then restrict any followup discussion to one newsgroup. For example, I'm going to set the follow-ups to this post to go to redbrick.help, as I'm being nice and helping you to understand stuff. ;)

Second, the author may want all responses to go directly to him/her via e-mail, so that he/she can prepare a summary of them to post later. Placing the word poster in the Followup-To: line accomplishes this.

Finally, here's the headers for this post after all my modifications to them:

Newsgroups: redbrick.babble,redbrick.help
From: "Mr.Sephiroth" <Moridin@3l33t.RedBrick.cx>
Subject: Re: Website hosting
References: <slrnae2607.gus.henough@Prodigy.redbrick.dcu.ie>
Reply-To: moridin@redbrick.dcu.ie
Followup-To: redbrick.help

Then you can continue to post as normal. :)

Timeline Years

Pre-History
In October of 1995 a group of friends started the ball rolling on the idea of a computer network in DCU, run by students for the students. Starting out with a battered 386 PC with 8 MB of RAM(dubbed Nurse), bits of borrowed memory, their own cash, and a lot of luck, they went about organising the D.C.U Networking society. The initial build of the Nurse was performed on an 800MB hard drive (the first RB disk) in DrJolt's home computer on February 4th, 1996. Once recognised as a society, they were allowed to setup a temporary home for the server in the Computer Applications facility, going online in the postgrad area on March 5th, 1996 as dcuns.compapp.dcu.ie. Later, the society received its own subnet and subdomain of dcu.ie from the Computer Services Department.

Having decided to try for an alternative to 'dcuns' as the domain name, 'RedBrick' was selected, DrJolt's suggestion being inspired by the diverse and exciting architecture of DCU (at that time, most permanent structures in DCU were built of red brick). They were also able to find physical accomodation (the CA department being unwilling to extend the temporary arrangements) in which to store Nurse, under a desk in QG07. Nurse went online as Nurse.RedBrick.dcu.ie on April 9th, 1996.

April
The DCU Networking Society is founded.

9th - nurse.redbrick.dcu.ie goes officially online
The primary application on Redbrick for members was the BBS (Bulletin Board System(. The BBS ran on top of a shell and featured chat and newsgroups. The BBS software Redbrick used was called Eagle BBS. The Babble newsgroup was created this month.

The first Redbrick event took place on October 17th. It was orgainsed over chat by a number of members who had never met in real life. Bernice, Cammy, Dauphin, Soma, Erricc and Jacques met up and went to Fibbers.

Trivia: this was the first time Cammy and Dauphin physically met. Currently (2006) they are married and have a 2 year old little girl but only Cammy is still a member of Redbrick.
art_wolf
Cool picture I have hanging up. Have had it for ages and its by Art Wolfe.

bilco
Cause as a fresher I though it was the character's name from The Hobbit

cammy
I was using it as a web handle long before I joined Redbrick. It comes from the name of one of my first roleplaying characters that wasn't just a bunch of stats. The name for that roleplaying character though, came from the computer game Streetfighter 2.

Well actually cammy was my second choice. I would have liked to use The_Dead_One but that exceeds the 8 character limit.

cooker3
It is my username for the lab machines in the CA building, it's not to do with an obcession with cookers!

david
The year that I joined DCU Hasselhoff was given a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. With all the new challenges in my life at that time I found that he was someone I could look up to. I could admire his achievements. He was like an uncle to me. I grew up on Kinght Rider and am looking forward to the new movie coming out this year. And then when I got a little older and started noticing girls I got interested in Baywatch. I wanted to be the stud that he was on that show. Appropriately in 2000 when I joined redbrick he released one of his many hit albums in Germany - "The Magic Colleciton". So I chose david as my redbrick username because ... well actually its not that interesting really, its my name in real life.

drag0n
Friends in college said that I needed a nickname, probably because they're too lazy to say my full name "Diarmuid" and I find "Diarm" quite creepy, so basically, "dragon" popped into their heads and it stuck! I used be called siphi (for no particular reason, it was a random name I was known by onli ne), then changed to drag0n (with a zero). The zero is because the user "dragon" is allready taken on rb. But everyone loved the new name so I added the zero. If you hey the other dragon, you generally get a confused hey in response, so I generally have heys disabled. anyways...

drusilla
My nick was surprisingly enough, from the character on Buffy! Friends of mine in second year of school gave it to me when they noticed the similarities between myself and the insane vampire. Funnily, dru was my second nick on RedBrick, before that I was zerocool

elmer
My username came from my first ever email address(elmer@clubi.ie) which i chose based on the looney tunes character elmer fudd

exzantia
As many, many people have pointed out, my name seems like a random string of letters, and it kinda is... When I was signing up for a Yahoo mail account in '98 everything I tried was already taken. I was not having under-scores or numbers so I decided to come up with something that would always be available! I thus far have succeeded.

fox_chic
Cause I'm an xphile and Mulder's first name is Fox. :)

gizmo
My nick came from a combination of thinking gizmo was a pretty cool name due to that little flurry critter in Gremlins and also cns putting me on the spot on Clubs And Socs day when I first joined so that I couldn't think of anything else. Strange, but true.

jesjes
My name is Jessica. And people from home call me Jesi, and at some stage during sixth year I decided I much more liked Jess. So when I got THE INTERNETS, I just called myself jesjes. It stuck.

kpodesta
Because that's my real name. I thought Redbrick was some email yoke - all else fails, I was getting a decent email address.

lithium
Coz I like the sound of it. And coz it goes crazy when you put it in water. And not because of the Nirvana song.

macbain
He wanted the username 'mcbain' but Karlos (mcbain) got it before him. Being original, Sarv decided that macbain would do instead, so he could forever confuse new users between himself and Karl.

montoya
The name is that of a character from the book "The Princess Bride" by William Goldman. The specific character is Inigo Montoya, a Spanish swordsman out for revenge against a 6-fingered man who killed Inigo's father.

moridin
The most evil and therefore cool character in a series of books that I was reading. Said series of books has since degenerated into a mush of crap writing. Boo.

noelfitz
8 letter truncation of my real name (boring but true.)

p
Back the old days of IOL/Indigo's IRC servers I used a variety of names, which all began with the letter p. Eventually, I ditched the different nicknames and used ^P^. Redbrick doesn't support weird characters though, so now it's just p. It also happens to be my middle initial.

sandman
I didn't. It was assigned on the basis that a) I was asleep and b) I read comics, didn't I? Ironically, I hadn't read much Sandman at the time.

shimoda
It was a character in a book (Illusions by Richard Bach) I read during my formative years. Another rb user thought the description of the protagonist was suited to me so I nabbed the name.

singer
I was a singer in a band. The guitarist mocked me for being the singer by calling me "singer". The nickname stuck. Non-Redbrick people address me as singer! My 2nd choice username was "scano".

spock
I chose spock because I had no idea that it would follow me around for at least the next 10 years.
I didn't even know what Redbrick was when I was joining, and when I had a membership form thrust
in my face by Hyper on Freshers day 1996, we had three preferences for username. I put down "spock" as my first preference. It wasn't taken, and that is how I didn't end up with the username "data", or "benji".

svan
Sarunas Vancevicius. First letter of name, then first 3 letters from surname.

thedara
My nick was given to me years before redbrick on irc (irc.phishy.net) I was the first person some americans had met called Dara and they
found that interesting for some reason or other and hence I became thedara.
On redbrick irc i'm known as Darz0re, It was a in-joke at the time when myself and dizer stuck z0re at the end of out names
hence thez0rekorp.com and z0re.org

* If there's going to be a seperate app it should not be in favour of flin/flash but a seperate interface, again. I think a full web solution would cover a GUI but if people are interested in a seperate GUI then fire ahead with it.
