The RedBrick VM Project was started to allow members to admin their own virtual machines running on the RedBrick network. In 2009 the machine [[Daniel]] was purchased for this purpose. It has a 2 quad core processors and a massive 24 GB of RAM, making it the most powerful machine RedBrick has ever had ever (evar!). <del>[[Cynic]]</del> [[Data]] was reassigned to provide firewall and services (proxy, dns) for the VM network.

The system is currently in beta. This means you can use it and stuff, but, don't expect things to be perfect :)

Since it is not suitable on which to run Windows, and Cynics asplosion earlier in the summer, we've decided to use it to replace Cynic as the firewall/services machine for [[Daniel]], and hopefully grant-app for a server on which to run windows.

[[Image:Carbon.jpg|thumb|right]]Carbon was a direct result of discusions on the Admin-discuss list. It was felt that Prodigy could no longer handle the load placed on RedBrick during peak periods. Carbon was directly funded by the Society and the SPC.

Carbon was the primary login server until it was replaced by [[Murphy]]. Between then and 2010 it performed a variety of small tasks. With the arrival of [[Morpheus]] in 2009 and [[Worf]] in 2010 the remaining services were migrated allowing Carbon to become a dedicated development machine. It is intended that Carbon will in future follow the six month Ubuntu release cycle (rather than the LTS cycle generally followed) so users can access more recent development tools/libaries.

The switching off the [[RBVM_Hardware|irqchip setting]] allowed me to get the machine to boot, however, I couldn't get any working network interface with this set. There's another fix for this issue, documented [http://scie.nti.st/2009/10/4/running-openbsd-4-5-in-kvm-on-ubuntu-linux-9-04 here].

The default network card also doesn't work very well, set it to e1000 instead. The i8255i (fxp0) device seems to crash the vm when it tries to bring up the network.

Should work with the ne2k_pci driver with ACPI & SMP disabled and acpi disabled in KVM. Support for this will be added to rbvm soon.

There's now a couple of options for specifying what type of hardware you want attached to your virtual machine.

== NIC device ==
Some guest OSes may lack drivers for certain network cards. KVM/QEMU has a few different types available, you can choose which one you want to use with the "NIC device" dropdown on the VM management screen.

To save changes, make sure you click the red button to the right of the dropdown (I've made the mistake a couple of times of changing the option in the dropdown and just hitting power on). Also, note that if your VM is running, the change will not be instantaneous. You'll need to power off and power back on your VM for the change to take effect (think about it - would you change the ethernet card in a real machine while it was switched on?).

== Disable KVM IRQ chip ==
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what this does. Ticking the box makes RBVM set the -no-kvm-irqchip command-line option when launching your VM. The internet told me that this fixes lots of obscure problems that people have with some of the less common guest OSes (like [[RBVM_BSD|OpenBSD]]), so it seemed like a good idea to include a way to set it.

Like the NIC device selection, you need to click the red button to the right of the checkbox after changing it (again, I've made the mistake of ticking it and just hitting power on, and then wondered for ten minutes why it didn't work). Also, the change only takes effect when you power on your VM - if it's running, you need to power it off and then on again.

There's now a couple of options for specifying what type of hardware you want attached to your virtual machine.
= NIC device =
Some guest OSes may lack drivers for certain network cards. KVM/QEMU has a few different types available, you can choose which one you want to use with the "NIC device" dropdown on the VM management screen.

To save changes, make sure you click the red button to the right of the dropdown (I've made the mistake a couple of times of changing the option in the dropdown and just hitting power on). Also, note that if your VM is running, the change will not be instantaneous. You'll need to power off and power back on your VM for the change to take effect (think about it - would you change the ethernet card in a real machine while it was switched on?).

= Disable KVM IRQ chip =
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what this does. Ticking the box makes RBVM set the -no-kvm-irqchip command-line option when launching your VM. The internet told me that this fixes lots of obscure problems that people have with some of the less common guest OSes (like OpenBSD), so it seemed like a good idea to include a way to set it.

Like the NIC device selection, you need to click the red button to the right of the checkbox after changing it (again, I've made the mistake of ticking it and just hitting power on, and then wondered for ten minutes why it didn't work). Also, the change only takes effect when you power on your VM - if it's running, you need to power it off and then on again.

The RedBrick VM Project was started to allow members to admin their own virtual machines running on the RedBrick network. In 2009 the machine [[Daniel]] was purchased for this purpose. It has a 2 quad core processors and a massive 24 GB of RAM, making it the most powerful machine RedBrick has ever had ever (evar!). [[Cynic]] was reassigned to provide firewall and services (proxy, dns) for the VM network.

The system is currently in beta. This means you can use it and stuff, but, don't expect things to be perfect :)

The system started as a need for a 'remote power button', but quickly grew into much more than that. At the moment it's mostly the excellent work of werdz, but, contributions and bugfiles are welcome. The code is stored in its own repo at http://hg.redbrick.dcu.ie/rbvm and bugs are tracked on [[RBVM_Bugs|this page]]. Debs of the code are available from http://packages.redbrick.dcu.ie .

The easiest way to configure on this is to use dpkg
