Description
Carbon was a direct result of discusions on the Admin-discuss list. It was felt that Prodigy could no longer handle the load placed on RedBrick during peak periods. Carbon was directly funded by the Society and the SPC.

Carbon was the primary login server until it was replaced by Murphy. Between then and 2010 it performed a variety of small tasks. With the arrival of Morpheus in 2009 and Worf in 2010 the remaining services were migrated allowing Carbon to become a dedicated development machine. It is intended that Carbon will in future follow the six month Ubuntu release cycle (rather than the LTS cycle generally followed) so users can access more recent development tools/libaries.

In August 2010, during the server room move, Carbon got a RAM upgrade from 2G to 4G, the extra ram in question coming from Data.

In November 2010, it started dying. We're not sure why, yet.

As of 2012 Carbon was decommissioned and replaced by a new server Pygmalion.
ceiling cat. "At least it's not Harry Potter-related"</td></tr>
</table>

Description
Ceilingcat was funded by the SPC in 2007. Prior to it's arrival the room had a 21" CRT taking up most of the desk, and various old desktop machines, none of which seemed to actually work.

To solve this werdz, lil_cain & receive picked pretty much the cheapest parts they could find, along with the cheapest 22" LCD screen they could find.

Ceilingcat was purchased by receive, and assembled by werdz. It's mainly used to burn disks, and use firefox, but it has also been used for extra storage, testing etc. We used it a couple of times to netboot other machines, and to host a Solaris VM which was used to kickstart Murphy. Not only that, but it has a very loud sound system that coconut and sonic like using in order to relieve deathray-related stress.

In early 2010 it was connected to the new Dell Powervault disk array (Worf; we needed to see if the damn thing would turn on), so for a few brief weeks of its life it had the best set of disks of any Redbrick machine, and possibly the best set of disks of any DCU machine.

As of November 2011, Ceiling Cat was transferred from the server room to the common room (N109). Its HDD was formatted, and Ubuntu 11.10 installed along with XBMC.

As of April 2012, Ceiling Cat returned triumphant to the newly cleaned and organized server room where it serves its original purpose as an admin desktop machine.

As of April 2013, Ceiling Cat has returned to the clouds. It is awaiting repair.
BREAKING NEWS: Dregin just came out of the emo closet to Castle in #lobby. Check here for proof.

There is also evidence of dregin's allegiance to the ultra-faggy straight edge trend.

13:06 < Attol> someone recently told me they'd gone straight edge, can't remember who

Life.
It's all just one big fuck up really. People spend the majority of it looking for somebody else.
Like, what if you never do find that person who's supposed to make you happy? Do you die miserable?
Is anyone ever really always happy? Sure, I've been happy. But it never seems to last.
Happiness, building you up just to shatter it all down again when you won't see it coming since the beginning of time.
So what's the answer to avoid being shattered? Not letting anything external to your own body/mind.
That'll never work. You'll die alone like that.
But maybe it is better to die alone rather than just get hurt, over and over again.
I sure know I'm sick of being hurt, aren't you?
Proxy Access
All outbound http(s) traffic must go through the proxy - proxy.vmsrv.redbrick.dcu.ie (136.206.16.254) port 3128

Ubuntu
To make sure apt uses the above proxy server, you need to add a file to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ and put the details into it. Here's how you do it:

~> cd /etc/apt/apt.conf.d
~> sudo nano proxy

You'll be asked to enter your VM password at this point, before nano starts.

In this new file (proxy), type the following:

Acquire::http::Proxy "http://proxy.vmsrv.redbrick.dcu.ie:3128";

Hit Ctrl-x, then "y" to save the details.

----

To set your proxy system-wide you will need to edit you shellrc file. By default this is .bashrc on Ubuntu. Here's how you do it:

~> cd $HOME
~> nano .bashrc

Add the following lines to end of this file

export http_proxy="http://proxy.vmsrv.redbrick.dcu.ie:3128";
export ftp_proxy="http://proxy.vmsrv.redbrick.dcu.ie:3128";

Hit Ctrl-x, then "y" to save the details.

Then you will need to logout and log back in for changes to take effect or you can run this command.

~> source .bashrc
