Good article! I've done some minor updates, namely converting it to the wiki syntax and removing the manual table of contents as thats automatically generated (as long as you use wiki syntax). I had never considered contracting myself, but now I definitly won't! :)

BTW there is another reason to hire a contracter... managers can offload responsibilty onto someone now in the company. For example if a company needs to lay off staff, they can hire a contractor to tell them what they already know but just so that management can say that "based on what the contracter said we have to...". Just my 2c
