Minutes of committee meeting, Wednesday 11th July 2001.
Present: kpodesta. moridin, tibor, magluby, cokane, colmmacc, thor, p, phil, noelfitz.
o Internet Workshops
Conor is going to send karl an email containing the names of everyone who helped out at the open internet workshops over the past few months. Karl will then mail the ppl involved to thank them for their time.
As regards expanding this to a semester-long, if we're interested in doing this then we need to draw up a programme of what exactly we're going to do with the kids. People suggested showing them how to create a webpage as being a good idea. It was generally accepted that this would be a good thing for us to be involved in. Donal (thor) mailed Donal Motherway about the possibility of booking LG25 for this but it's not looking possible. There may be a room in the basement of the library which we could use.
o Redbrick Room
Jon has gone on holidays, leaving it up to the rest of us to organise the situation about the room we've been promised. Donal is going to contact Richie Kelly in Buildings about it - we need to get a list of our power requiirements to him before anything else can be done.
o Intersocs
We're going to try and get some form of Intersocs news / chat up for the coming semester. Some concerns were expressed about people not posting to redbrick newsgroups and concentrating on intersocs ones, but that's not really something that we can deal with until/if it arises. It was suggested that we limit the intersocs groups to computery/techy ones.
o Hardware
Sarvesh has tested the CPU from Enigma and it appears to be okay, indicating that the motherboard is faulty. The admins are going to come up with a solution of what to do - e.g. what hardware to buy, and mail it to committee.
With the amount of machines that we currently have it might be advantageous if the admin team was larger. This possiblity was discussed with no real resolution... if it becomes necessary then perhaps an admin working group could be formed, or the number of admins increased to a potential 5. Admin training was also discussed, using the s390, and we again agreed to run the admin training course, which will run through the first semester next year. Phil is looking into course content, of which we have an idea from John Bolgers proposals.
o Clubs and Socs day
Date: Wednesday 10th October -> First event will be on Tuesday 16th
Paper Mache Brick under construction by Donal. Contact the people we got the nice blue backgrounds for Bertie's presentation as they have the backgrounds and also a colour poster printer, which could come in very handy.
C&S Day will most likely be in the Sports Complex this year, and if so we will be in our usual, far left, corner.
We're going to get another banner done up with "Best Society" etc on it, and hoist the banners up on 10ft sticks or something similar.
Kevin is going to do up actual sized logos for t-shirts and send them to Karl, who will try and get a sample T-shirt printed from Ronan.
Brian is going to mail people he's been talking to about mouse-mats, and find out what format they need the logos etc in.
We're going to do the "information sheet" again this year, instead of a booklet, as it was so handy and useful last year. One change will be that we'll print it on coloured paper to make it stand out more.
New members will get a heavily aliased shell as opposed to a menu. bash and zsh were suggested. A redbrick .fortune file was suggested also.
Donal suggested we have an optional "birthdate" field for new members and the system could email them happy birthday ;o) Also a redbrick address book / contact database was mentioned, but the reaction wasn't as good to that as it was to the birthday idea.
o Ents
1st event will be in TBMC on tuesday 16th October and will be free. We should get TBMC for £500. Simon Keely has a contact in Hot Press which we may be able to make use of. Acts mentioned were:
- RadioHead - Damien Rice - Street Thunder - Wilt - Skindive
o CSD
We should approach CSD to see if we can get a Redbrick e.g. R:\ mapped on the images for next year.
o Redbrick Big Brother
We'll be running a Big Brother Board for 5 weeks from Friday week. Applications will be send to bigbrother@redbrick.dcu.ie. Prize money is £50. Participants will not be able to read or post to boards other than the bigbrother one. Depending on interest level, committee members may enter, and if that happens a sub-group will run the project. Webpage etc will keep people updated on the what's going on on the board, and it will of course be readable by all members.
