In October 1998 redbrick ran into two major problems. The first problem was the loss of one of its best admins, plop. The second problem was a huge increases in the incidents of "screen bombing". What followed included mistakes, system crashes and questions about Redbrick's security, privacy and user's privacy.
Plop was replaced by John Bolger as system admin who shortly afterward installed a patch which had not had a full security check and left a dangerous flaw in the system. Plop wrote an exploit for this and Redbrick crashed, and as a result John retrieved the source code from Plop's directory without permission from the committee or plop.
