Open Internet Workshop

We've been asked to run an internet workshop for some primary school kids. It'll take place in LG25 from about 13:30 to 14:30 on this Thursday & Friday, all the following week, and the next Monday & Tuesday.

Redbrick Room

Jon met with one of the guys from buildings and he says that we shouldn't put machines in the room in the X building. Instead he's going to try and get us a room in the Henry Grattan building. Unfortunately as Jon isn't present we don't have much more details than this at the present.

Hardware

  • DLT: Has been ordered
  • CD-Burner Machine is now working, It's currently residing in Donals' (redgiant) res.
  • The SCSI Cable has been ordered by moridin and should arrive this Wednesday, costing £35.

Netsoc A/C's

We've gotton logons to other netsoc machines and they've been given redbrick logons. Now we need to define a set of usage policies for these accounts.

Ents

As said in the last meeting there will probably be 2 events this summer, no details as yet.

Web Issues

The closing date for Registration of the webcomp is 10th July and it will run until 21st August.

Group Wheel

Macbain suggested that Committee should not have any say on who has root access to the redbrick systems, especially login machines. As admins are responsible for the security of the system, the admins are the only ones who can authorise root access. This access may not be granted to anyone who has not been in the position of having elected root access while in a committee role.

Disclaimer

We need to formulate a disclaimer for September, basically lots of policies need to be formulated for the coming year.

Newsgroups & External Access

External access to newsgroups will not be allowed, apart from the redbrick.announce group. Selected newsgroups will be accessible inside DCU:

  • redbrick.su
  • redbrick.suggestions
  • redbrick.accommodation
  • redbrick.clubsandsocs

All other access will be via a redbrick login only.

IRC

Mark & Donal suggested a series of IRC policies that were accepted with the following amendments:

  • The 3 IRC ops will be redbrick's intersocs IRC Moderators
  • Committee will retain Moderator status on the redbrick #lobby channel
  • Colours will be turned off by default, but a user may enable them if they so wish
  • Sessions using the "screen" program will not be allowed, as it creates a false sense that people are in a room.
