Redbrick Committee Meeting: 27 September 2004

Present: Michelle, Donal, Charlene, Charlie, Eoghan, Mark, Mickey, Tina, John, Una, Dave.

Guests: Riona Judge McCormack

Grant Application

Mark listed his proposed events. This was the first time many of the rest of the committee had heard about them, so they were discussed more fully later in the meeting. Riona gave feedback concerning the need to hold more events on campus after hearing that the Freshers' Ball, Hallowe'en and Christmas were all scheduled off-campus and the Alt.Rag on. The rest of the committee requested that these be reviewed because the Alt.Rag is traditionally an off-campus alternative music event set in contrast to the DCU SU line-up. Riona also expressed worries about the Battle of the Bands event idea, since it it not significantly linked to RedBrick's activities.

Hardware was discussed again. (Previous list in minutes-2004-09-29.txt) Charlie suggested that the rack rails may not be required because of the questionable usefulness of troublegum.redbrick

Other hardware items (cable tidy, fibre converter) will be applied for.

Events

After Riona had to leave, the committee discussed the event proposals;

The Freshers' Ball is planned and tickets were given out to those who signed up on C&S day.

Tutorials will run (on Tuesday evenings) from next week.

The Hallowe'en Ball, while desireable to stage on-campus, may have to be held in the city centre due to the refurb of the new bar. A lengthy and rambling discussion was held on possible venues, during which:

  • Voodoo was rejected for not being central enough,
  • Issac Butt was rejected for having kicked us out last time,
  • TempleBar Music Centre was rejected for a reason I failed to minute
  • Fibbers was rejected for being a "stab you in the face and piss on your corpse"* type of place.

No venue was ultimately agreed on by committee majority. However, a gothic themed venue with a decent prize for best costume was briefly discussed and will be looked into for the next meeting.

The Christams event was originally intended to be off-campus but has been moved back to the new bar and venue in the interest of making a more SPC-friendly inter-soc on-campus party. Music soc to be talked to about getting the egomaniacs to play.

Tech Wek events were suggested and included;

  • Talks and a high profile keynote speaker. Suggestions welcome.
  • Multimedia and Digital Art exhibitions. MPS to be contacted.
  • A "Cyber Love"** dating event, unanimously vetoed.
  • A wireless hunt, suggested by Charlie and based on the DefCon, LV, RunningMan event. Charlie to write a proposal on this. Sponsorship to be sought from wireless broadband or other related industries.

The Alt.Rag Ball to be held off-campus and provisionally decided as a bootleg concert, pending an investigation of costume prices.
