Minutes of meeting, 16-8-2000.

Present:

  • moridin, kpodesta, bubble, spock, p, cokane, bobb.

Hardware

CSD have agreed to supply us with a Fibre Switch and a Rack for NOTHING. This leaves us with about £3800 to spare, however Dave Murphy is owed £500 as he lost this when the original suppliers of the switch went into bankruptcy. Jon has done up a Memo to the SPC to request that the money allocated to acquiring this hardware be re-allocated to allow us to buy a storage solution, possibly an external RAID array or a SCSI box. Bobb is going to look into what would actually suit us and get a hardware listing/quotes to us for inclusion on the memo before the next SPC meeting, in 2 weeks time.

Sponsorship

  • Has mark dropped the sponsorship letter into IBM?
  • Symantec haven't replied to our mail, moridin will try and contact them to see if they've blown a fuse at our last mail.
  • Karl will contact flunk.net so that we can say to the SPC that we have a sponsor the "the event", in order to get more money from them.
  • It looks like the SU may invest in a backup solution, if so we want access, i.e. a shared backup solution ;)

Trips

  • Galway: We have £2000 still allocated for a trip to Galway... can we go before next semester?
  • SU Training Weekend: We want as many ppl as possible to go to this. Moridin wants to go to get info on how to be a better secretary ;)

The Big Move

Hopefully we'll be moving to the Student centre as soon as we get our switch from CSD. In the meantime we're going to try and get the Rack that they've given us into our area, to depose the Evil Coffee Machine (ECM) which currently resides there.

Taking it

  • Karl is going to take it up the ass from the SU/CSD for the backup solution.
  • Jon is going to take it up the ass from Symantec.
  • Relevant Quote: "I'd say the CSD guys have bigger cocks" - Jon.

Project Proposals & CA

  • Beowulf: Karl is looking into putting a proposal on this into Alan Smeaton, Bobb is going to help too. The more machines the better, we want a bigger cluster then Trinity.
  • One Dell PC needed for an admin workstation for the Student Centre.
  • Dell PC's needed for helpdesk tutorials / admins training.
  • It was proposed to have a live PC in the canteen after Freshers week... this would also be one of the Dells.

Freshers day

  • Menu: Should have an answer from the admins on this by the end of the month.
  • Handbook: Will be written after the menu has been decided on - Kevin will check out prices etc.
  • Posters: Elmer may help with photocopying ;)
  • T-Shirts: Going to get a quote from Ledg on 50 Rb T-Shirts.
  • Gophers: We're going to try & start organising people to help out now for the day/week.
  • Karl is going to Ring Assets to book a model for the Clubs & socs day. No - we're not nerds.
  • We want to get redbrick people doing introduction talks for new students.

Disusering

  • Newsgroups will be put under IdentD in the next few days, so we can block access to them for certain ppl if needed.
  • Webmaster has discretion to do as he wants within reason in these cases but will cc the committee.
