Carbon was the primary login server until it was replaced by [[Murphy]]. Between then and 2010 it performed a variety of small tasks. With the arrival of [[Morpheus]] in 2009 and [[Worf]] in 2010 the remaining services were migrated allowing Carbon to become a dedicated development machine. It is intended that Carbon will in future follow the six month Ubuntu release cycle (rather than the LTS cycle generally followed) so users can access more recent development tools/libaries.
